How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We are pretty happy with this Banfield location. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The only drawback is they fewer appointment slots that allow you to stay with your pet. Before COVID that wasn’t a problem, but now they prefer you to just leave your pet. Other than that, I’m happy with the service they provide.

I honestly liked this Banfield location but when it came time for my dog’s dental surgery and comprehensive exam that I knew about and planned for 6 months ago, never again. 1. They moved the appointment up a month early to April. 2. They overcharged me for early renewal for the Optimum Wellness Plan that I was supposed to pay for in the original month scheduled, May. Originally they told me it was going to be $500 at his previous appointment and then his next appointment came and they said it could be $1,000 because prices change. Not sure how prices change for procedures but ok. That’s something I have to figure out. It turns out that his dental surgery went well and better than expected and I spoke to the doctor and they said I’d pay less than I expected. Woohoo. They call me again and tell me that I’d be charged for an early renewal— when they moved me up a month early — add that on to the $1,000 again after you told me I’d pay less? I took a moment of silence on the phone and even apologized because I was becoming stressed of all these added on charges now. The lady spoke to someone else in charge to mention the early charge and they told me “I don’t know why they did that.” Then she proceeded to tell me that they’d take off the $97.63 for the plan. Then I go there to pick up my boy 6 hours later and a different girl charges me $913.90 and until after I get back to work they wanna call me and tell me that they overcharged me ??? She admitted it was her fault and apologized for overcharging me. $913 is a big difference from $816 and the only reason I was sane in that moment is because I was willing to spend more than a thousand on my dog. They were closing by that time and I was already back at work. I tried to email and call, to where there was no answer on their end. I tried to dispute it with my credit card company and Banfield just now fought it and is saying that it’s correct ??? I disputed it a week after April 12 and they just now fought it after they charged my card. They even used my signature on a form that I signed April 12th, before his surgery when they take all the payment info. I swear it’s all money and talk. Besides that BS of taking off charges, everyone is nice and sweet there but man, they don’t pay attention or communicate when they charge cards.

Banfield has moved to a mostly drop off style appointment. They expect you to leave your pet there for 4-6 hours on the day of their appointment. If you want an in-person appointment you need to wait months. We will be leaving for a vet that actually allows the owner to be there with their animal.

I have been very happy with Banfield and their staff. We have been taking our dog there for almost 3 years now and they have taken very good care of him. We just recently got a puppy and have started her care there as well. I love the Wellness plan options. It makes it affordable to be able to get the care needed for our pets. I 100% recommended Banfield.

Always have a pleasant experience when Zuri goes for her Wellness appointments. My only concern is, when she’s picked up, she’s EXTREMELY thirsty, more than she ever drinks & when asked if she’s given water while she’s there, sometimes, 4-5hrs., we are always told that they give her water during her stay which we find hard to believe because Zuri will drink water Nonstop until her bowl is empty after she’s picked up or she will drink from a water bottle in the car like she hasn’t had any water all day long and it’s Extremely Concerning to us. 3stars for this on~going concern 😞
