How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have been Banfield customers for many years. We are “regulars” at whatever state we reside. This Banfield has been our favorite location in UT since it opened. The team has been kind & understanding from our beginnings to the ends. Being a hypochondriac parent, they have been patient & thorough. They even tolerate our cry baby chihuahua. Thanks for always helping!

These guys are great. I especially love Dr. Leavitt. She helped my 12 year old dog with his grade 4 heart murmur. She put him in heart meds. We were able to get another year and a half with him. She also helped my other 12 year old dog with her arthritis and hemorrhoids. They're very sweet and compassionate.

I have been coming to Banfield for a couple years, the doctors have always been pleasant and professional. I brought my good girl in for a glad expression and they took her to the back room and I heard her crying bad. Now I know glad expression isn't the most pleasant things but she has never cried while I have been in the room. I did not like the way the nurse brought my little girl back out to me and basically shrugged her shoulders about it. My little dog is a complete sweetheart and she didn't deserve that kind of treatment. I'm very disappointed with the technician that did it and the callous nurse that brought her back to me. Banfield, remember that our dogs are our family and you hurt them it hurts us.

I was given a coupon for a FREE visit that happened to expired 2 days before they had an available appointment. When I made the appointment I made sure to ask if I could still use this coupon and I was told yes and that they would put that in my appointment notes. When appointment day came the note was nowhere to be found and they only gave me a discount rather than honoring the coupon that I had.

Mary at the front desk is always so pleasant and kind and I am always grateful for her. Today we saw the new doctor, Dr Walters and she was also great and very helpful and kind. I wish my visits weren’t so hit and miss here because most of the time Banfield can be amazing but every now and then we have an experience that shocks me to the core. Today was great and if every visit was like this I would be a Banfield customer for life. Unfortunately they are not all like this. One suggestion would be to differentiate yourselves from other locations nearby. There seems to be three locations that call themselves the “West Jordan location” and that causes a lot of confusion because today I went to the Jordan in Landing location because as far as I knew I had an appointment for two of my dogs at the West Jordan location…..and I did but I went to the normal West Jordan location we go to and they were closed. So I obviously had the wrong location and I don’t feel like that was communicated with me. But nevertheless today was great and I want to say you have some great staff that are true animal lovers like myself. I wanted to leave a new review today for the great experience I had but the only option was to edit my previous review so I’m going to change my one star review to a four star review because today Mary and Dr Walters were above and beyond amazing but I’m going to leave this old review up because I still think it’s relevant and I’m still bothered by it and it’s the main reason none of our dogs will be renewing their Banfield plans. Be aware of Dr Macasevich! I am livid by the way she treated me and my dog. I will definitely be making sure she isn’t going to be the one working on any of my dogs after the terrible experience I had at the West Jordan location with her. The receptionist and office manager were very nice and helpful. The doctor was incompetent and extremely unprofessional. I told her my dog was in constant pain, and she tells me she doesn’t feel comfortable prescribing Gabapentin because of the “potential of abuse from people in my household”…. She’s never met me nor does she know anything about my household. I told her there are no children or people in danger of abusing the medication in my household and still she refused. That is her reason why my 9 year old dog was sent home to suffer without the medication that we have given her in the past that worked great. Gabapentin is a non-narcotic pain medication!!! I would highly recommend staying away from Dr Mac and her judgmental incompetence. Banfield, you should be embarrassed she is on your staff.
