How to Save Money at Sandy Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This vet office is amazing. They’re all so friendly. The veterinarians are amazing the veterinary assistants are the sweetest and I wish I would’ve known about it 10 years ago. I think they are all the sweetest, most caring and kind people to not only the animals but to their owners, so thank you so much for showing me that this is the best place for us to take our furry loved ones!! 🙏🙏❤️💕Best Clinic EVER! It’s so great to know you can go somewhere that you can trust.

10/10 recommend! These people truly care! As soon as we walked through the doors they 3 beatiful technicians greeted us with our sweet puppy’s name! They immediately took us back and from the beginning to end explained everything they were doing and the cost and our options! They have our hearts and our dogs will be going here from now on! Thank you Sandy Animal Clinic & Dr McDonald!

Just as other reviewers have stated, Dr. McDonald is a terrible vet. I have a very high energy puppy and each vet visit, Dr. McDonald would roll her eyes and complain about his energy. My dog would be shaking from fear of her. He had a terrible ear infection and very first thing Dr. McDonald wants to do: sedate him ???? I tell her if I hold him in my lap, she should be able to look into his ears without sedation. She agrees and says, “I don’t see anything. Not sure why they are red and he’s been scratching and shaking them so much.” I left with no answers. On my way out, she made sure to remind me how much energy he has - well, he is a puppy + dogs can sense bad vibes. Sandy Animal Clinic, if you want customers coming back, I’d recommend replacing Dr. McDonald.

Can't say enough about the staff and service we've received at this clinic. Jenny and Dr. Edmonds take care of our dogs like their own, and the front desk always calls to check up after a surgery or treatment. We've had a puncture wound, dentals, and regular visits treated here.

I brought my aging cat to Sandy Animal Hospital twelve days ago for an eye issue. It was our first visit to this vet clinic. I disclosed that he has renal issues and has been on a special renal diet for three years. The vet, Dr. Macdonald, who I felt no connection to whatsoever and who didn’t appear to show sincere interest in my cat, didn’t know what was wrong but had several guesses. We left with two kinds of eye drops which we diligently applied. We had a second visit less than a week later, although I wasn’t allowed to speak to the vet. They took a blood sample in the back and said they’d call the next day with results. We left with more serum drops. No phone call the next day so I called myself the following day to receive blood test results. I was told that they had left a message but I received no message. The woman at the front desk said he has renal issues and should be on a renal diet. Shocker, I had told them that on the first visit. She said he might have Horner’s disease. Then she suggested a cat ophthalmologist. So I spent $384.27 to be told that my cat has renal disease which I told them in the first five minutes of the initial office visit and that they really couldn’t help him. I understand that it’s difficult to make a diagnosis in some instances and that this vet may not be experienced enough to deal with our situation but it felt like there was little effort put into helping my cat, especially after being told the same info that I had already provided and making it sound like it was their discovery. I would definitely not return to Sandy Animal Clinic or recommend it to other pet owners.
