How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is my all time favorite vet! All the staff here are very compassionate and patient, they treat my cat very well and they still give rude or aggressive cats the same quality of treatment. I’ve developed a relationship with the members of staff I see often, and we talk about our pets during the appointment. They can be busy or behind schedule, but it’s because they take as much time as is needed with every patient. Some of the bad reviews I read mention the Wellness Plan. I could get how it would be annoying to discuss that mid-appointment, but the plans really do help a lot and the services here are way cheaper. All my cat’s routine care is covered and I get 15% off everything else. People regularly ask me where I take my cat to the vet. Other negative reviews say that Dr. Nelson was rude. I can get how he can come off as stern, but it’s always because he cares. He’s very honest, he doesn’t sugarcoat what he tells you. He takes as much time as is needed with every patient, and he’s always studying new research in the field to give better care and to educate his patients.

It's always hard to find a good doctor when you move, but I never had to worry about finding a good vet because Banfield is available everywhere. My first experience at the Orem location wasn't the greatest, but it did get better. With the new Provo location, I have had nothing but good experiences. The vet technicians are kind and you can tell are animal lovers. The doctors are helpful and really listen and take care of concerns. I never liked to drop my dog off but I have been able to here because I know she is in good hands.

I would like to piggy back on the horrible review(s) of Dr Nelson. We took in our 2 year old Pug for a dental appointment a few months back. They said they noticed something odd in his mouth and wanted to do an X-ray. They did one singular X-ray and determined that he needed surgery to remove multiple dentigerious cysts. We then got a call back starting with the words “I have some unfortunate news”……. just to say that there isn’t a dental specialist in the state of Utah who can perform this surgery(which is incorrect). When we discussed finding someone to do it, Dr Nelson said he would do it himself but he isn’t willing to “open a textbook and go in blind”, which was a shockingly inappropriate and unprofessional comment. My wife and I were obviously very worried about this issue with our little buddy so we took him to Union Park Veterinary Hospital in Cottonwood Heights, who were fantastic. They determined that there were no cysts. When asked about where a potential surgery would be done, they told us that there is a dental specialist in Utah who does these surgeries, making Dr Nelson wrong again. Banfield was also unresponsive to Union Park Veterinary Hospital when trying to get a full set of x rays. The vet at Union Park informed us a full diagnosis can’t be made without a full x ray. Banfield in Provo said that they took a full x ray set, just to find out that was incorrect. So in summary, Dr Nelson diagnosed our dog with something he didn’t have, told us that there was no one in the state who can do the surgery, which was incorrect. Then it was determined that they didn’t even do a full set of x rays, making it impossible for anyone to make that diagnosis. Dr Nelson is the perfect blend of incompetent and unprofessional. We genuinely feel that our pet would be unsafe continuing to get care there. We recommend those in the Utah County area opting to take their pets to the Union Park Veterinary Hospital in Cottonwood Heights. They were so kind, caring, and gentle with our dog and did everything they could to get him the best treatment possible.

I never post reviews but I thought I would this time because although I do not know the managers name, when I called in with a concern, she was so helpful. She made sure that I understood everything. She walked me through the pricing of the plan and what that would include, she also helped me get my plan upgraded to best meet my dogs need. I am so impressed with how nice she was and the great customer service she provided.

Avoid Dr.Nelson! The vet tech was amazing! The vet Dr. Nelson on the other hand was rude and condescending. He cut me off from explaining the issue and then got frustrated when I became upset. He did not introduce himself, pet or even looked at my dog. I was there for two hours total and had high hopes when the vet tech was so great only to leave angry frustrated and in tears.
