How to Save Money at Wasatch Animal Urgent Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I honestly have never been so impressed in my life with the vet. I brought my young puppy in who had swallowed something and Dr. Luke and his team took amazing care of us. He took the time to explain things to me and made me feel comfortable with what was going on. The lady up front told me they would call when they were done but I was more than welcomed to call whenever to check on him. The tech also was very kind and good with my puppy and helped explain things as well. When it was time to pick my puppy up from surgery Dr. Luke took the time to explain to me what he had to do and draw a picture even so I was able to visualize what happened. Dr. Evans was also amazing to work with and was very kind. From start to finish I knew we were in great hands and I could never recommend this clinic enough. Thank you guys for everything you do.

I discovered at 10:00 on a Friday night that my cat needed to see a vet due to a ruptured abscess. I was prepared to have to drive all the way to Layton or even SLC. It was so nice to be able to take him to a local clinic. Not only was he able to get care MUCH sooner, but I didn’t have to worry about being awake half of the night trying to drive. The staff was kind & caring.

I had an incredibly frustrating experience at this after-hours vet. Despite being the only patient there, it took 30 minutes for a tech to even come in and talk to us, followed by another 45 minutes just to receive a price estimate. I was shocked by the cost—$250 for X-rays on a 15lb Pomeranian, plus a $125 appointment fee, and an estimated $100 for medication (without them even assessing her properly yet). They also pushed for $200 blood work due to her age, which I declined since I was only there for pain in her neck. After declining the blood work, it took another 20 minutes to get a revised estimate that I had to sign. They finally took my dog, and after 40 more minutes, the vet came in to tell me she just needed additional pain meds—nothing more. Then we waited another 30 minutes for the tech to return with my dog, and even after that, 45 more minutes passed with no medication in sight. After 3+ hours of waiting with my senior dog who had not been potty in that amount of time, I had enough and went to the front desk to ask to pay so I could leave. They told me the medication would take another 10 minutes. When I finally went to pay, the bill was nearly $500—$45 more than my estimate. When I asked why, the receptionist had to dig through paperwork to find my signed estimate, and the only answer was that “the meds must have cost more than expected.” I felt like nothing more than a dollar sign to them. On top of the excessive wait times and lack of urgency, I could hear the staff laughing and goofing off the entire time I was stuck in the room waiting for nothing. This place is disorganized, overpriced, and completely unprofessional. Next time, I’ll wait for regular vet hours. Not worth the time or money.

Dr.Evans and the team there tonight were amazing. I so appreciated how the doctor validated my concerns and how communicative he was about what might have been wrong with my cat. The vet isn't a cheap place but as a poor college student, I appreciated how open they were with how much things would cost. The team was fast and made sure that all of my questions were answered and they listened to my concerns.

We came in on a Saturday evening with a cat in need of help and Wasatch Animal Urgent Care took fantastic care of us. The staff were extremely helpful and communicative, and treated us and our cat with such kindness. I cannot say enough positive things about our experience and am so appreciative that the staff were able to help our furry family member.
