How to Save Money at Mountain West Veterinary Specialists
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

So lucky to have access to such an amazing ER! Every staff member, doctor, and tech, are kind and have helped my sweet animals in many different situations. The communication is great, and I trust them completely. We have been unfortunate to have several emergencies over the past 2 years, but so fortunate for Dr Simmons, Dr Kara and their teams, for their knowledge and helping me make the best decisions for my animals. Thank you Mountain West

We took our bearded dragon to Mountain West Veterinary in March because they were the only place that could see him in an emergency. Turns out our bearded dragon had cryptosporidium and we were on a great recovery path. The Vets here were very patient with us, answered all our questions and were very helpful for us as first time owners. Unfortunately, he had another emergency in which they were able to see our dragon once more. This time it was cancer and there was nothing we could do :( We must have been up and down a dozen times since March, we live in Murray, and they saw us every time and were quick to get back to us. Rusty passed away this afternoon and I know he's at peace now. Thank you to all the staff and the exotic specialist, I believe her name was Nicole (with all the insanity I don't think I got your name), for everything. RIP King

I took my puppy Sylvie in a couple weeks ago and while I wish I didn't have to, I'm glad they were there to take care of her! My wife and I got a puppy and then a couple days later, she started throwing up and we couldn't figure out why. At around 3am, she threw up again and we decided to take her in because we were afraid she might have gotten into something. After hours they're curbside only so they took her in and we waited. They told us that she seemed fine but they wanted to do an x-ray just to be sure and, unfortunately, there was a small metal object in her stomach that looked like a sewing needle. The doctor wouldn't come in until 8am so we went home and waited. They called us a few hours later and the doctor said that he would take another x-ray and the object looked less like a sewing needle, so he thought it should be fine to pass. A few days later, she started throwing up again and the object hadn't passed and the x-ray showed it was still in the stomach and the doctor said that the best bet would be to do an endoscopy, even though it was risky for puppies. They kept her for a day and did the endoscopy and managed to get the item out with no other issues. They gave us some medicine to make her feel better after the anesthesia and to help soothe her throat. While I wish we could have done the endoscopy first, I don't blame them for thinking it would pass. They absolutely took care of her and their regular calls gave us some peace of mind while we waited for her to be ready to come home. Now, a couple weeks later, little Sylvie is doing great and recovered perfectly! So thanks to Mountain West Veterinary Specialists for taking care of our puppy! I included a picture of the object, as well as the puppy when she was upset that we left her for so long.

Mountain West not only saved my dog from a blood disease known as IMHA, but treated me with outstanding kindness and understanding. Every single person I came in contact with, was amazing. From the customer service rep that greeted us, to the techs. and the emergency doctors. The Internal medicine specialist saw us today to develop an ongoing plan for my girl. She was so easy to talk to, and so knowledgeable about the disease. I feel like we're in amazing hands. I've worked in Veterinary medicine for over 40 years, and I knew when I walked into this hospital that Clara would be with the absolute best possible people. I can't say enough good about this place, and I know vet hospitals!

I love Mountain West Veterinary for their exotics doctors and facility. Having an emergency with exotic pets can be a nightmare but the staff at Mountain West really stepped up and helped us with one of our lizards recently. I showed up without an appointment and they said they'd work me in to the schedule as soon as possible. I was surprised when Dr. Lofgren, the lead vet over exotics, greeted me after a very short wait. She was very understanding and empathetic as she counseled with me on the options for treating our beloved pet. Ultimately due to his age and concerns with his quality of life, I made the difficult decision to have him euthanized. The staff gave me as much time as I needed to say goodby and after it was done, they presented me with a nice condolences card, complete with ink footprints from our lizard. Dr. Lofgren was amazing to work with, as were all the staff members I interacted with. I was also pleased to note that she is certified with the Assoc. of Reptile & Amphibian Veterinarians AND the Assoc. of Avian Veterinarians. Since I also own birds as well as exotic reptiles, we'll be seeing Dr. Lofgren and the Mtn. West staff for our regular checkups. THANK YOU Mountain West Veterinary!
