How to Save Money at Granite Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our dog had partial CCL tears in both legs. We opted to do the TPLO surgery in both legs in the same surgery. The pricing of the surgery was very fair and upfront. Dr. Becker is excellent, and was wonderful to work with. He is very knowledgeable and answered all our questions about treatment options, and ultimately helped us feel confident that we were making the best decision for our dog. had 100% trust in the staff at Granite Veterinary Specialists that they were going to take excellent care of our dog. We did the surgery in January 2024. The first picture is our dog a couple days after her surgery. The second is her swimming and playing fetch last month. She has bounced back extremely well and has such an improved quality of life. She is able to do everything that she did before her injury. My only regret is not doing the surgery sooner! I highly recommend Dr. Becker and the team at Granite Veterinary Specialists!

We are so happy with our experience with Dr. Becker and team. Our dog, Jerry, needed a TPLO. They were able to get him in for surgery within a week of our consultation visit. He is almost two weeks out of surgery now and he's doing fantastic. Their at home instructions are clear and understandable. We're looking forward to Jerry's full recovery in the next 6 weeks. The price for surgery was very reasonable as well. I would definitely come back in the future if needed! Thank you Dr. Becker and team! Edit- 1 year post op and Jerry is doing better than ever! He runs and does all his favorite things, pain free. Thank you Dr. Becker and team!!

My 74 pound olde English bulldog tore his crucial ligament in his leg and our local vet referred us to Granite Veterinary Specialists. I did my research ranging from Ogden to Park city to St. George looking for orthopedic surgeons for my dog (I wanted the best for him) and found that Granite was not only the top recommended but also more affordable than other places. The staff for both Granite and Hillside vet (they share a building) were not only friendly but also comforted me when I brought him in for his surgery day. He had to stay overnight for observation but they called me with updates throughout and never made me feel like a helicopter dog mom even though I guarantee they thought it LOL. When I picked him up the next day, the vet took the time to go over all the medications, what we should do/shouldn’t do with him the next few weeks, and answered all my questions. His leg was pretty gnarly as expected with that type of procedure he had to replace the crucial ligament, but now that it’s healed, he is just left with a small, barely visible, scar. I couldn’t have asked for a better surgeon or veterinary clinic for my pup and I am grateful for Granite Veterinary Specialists.

Dr Becker did a fantastic job taking care of my Mini aussie Izzy. She was limping and I had taken her to 3 different specialists and they could not determine that she had a torn ACL. Within minutes of seeing her he came to that conclusion and performed the surgery a few weeks later and now she is back to normal. We really appreciate the expertise at this clinic!

Our five year old Golden Doodle was diagnosed with a ruptured CCL by our vet. They recommended GVS. We scheduled surgery with Dr. Becker and we brought her in for the mandatory pre surgery consultation. Dr. Becker told us our dog's CCL was just fine...unfortunately she had a tumor on her hip which was causing the issue. He also told us there was a strong likelihood it was cancerous. He took a biopsy. Two days later we brought her in due to internal bleeding on her leg. The staff was so kind and helpful to our sweet Golden Doodle. Dr. Becker called us that afternoon with the results (on his day off). He told us it was an aggressive form of cancer. He gave some options to prolong her life but overall cautioned us to ensure we keep our dog's quality of life in mind. He told us to spoil our dog over the weekend and to focus on her quality of life. He recommended a service called lapoflove in the event we decide to put her down. We are grateful that Dr. Becker diagnosed our dog correctly and prepared us to help make the decisions we needed to. Everyone at GVS was kind and helpful. I highly recommend Dr. Becker and all those who work at GVS.
