How to Save Money at Southern Utah Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had a canine emergency and was able to get my senior rescue Pittie right in, (I have had her almost 10 years), staff is great! I didn't feel rushed, thankful the blood work showed an infection and nothing more serious, my Pittie was given antibiotics and my old girl is recovering at home. Love Dr Francisco and staff!

Dr. Francisco and staff were so wonderful in removing our 15 year old dogs teeth after suffering a tooth abscess. We were very nervous and they did a really great job! Thank you so much! Definitely worth the drive from Vegas! We will be back!

If I could give 0 out of 5 stars I would. I have been bringing my dogs here for the past few years and Dr. Esplin has always been amazing. HOWEVER, my year and a half year old dog had an infected, swollen, bleeding, sore on his belly and I brought him into the vet as a walk in. I was appreciative that they were able to get me in, but Dr. Francisco came into the room and laid my dog on his side on the table with a tech holding my dog down and without any numbing cream or pain management, or sedation he started cutting into my dog’s sore and digging around looking to see if something was inside. Obviously my dog was in pain and put his mouth around the tech’s wrist and she yelled, “DON’T BITE! DON’T BITE!” I was appalled by the way she was yelling at my dog when he was clearly in pain! They didn’t even clean the blood up or close the wound and sent us on our way and Dr. Francisco called my dog the wrong name. They gave us some oral antibiotics and said if he wasn’t better in two weeks to come back and they will have him sedated! When checking out I noticed that they had all of this on record for the wrong dog! They didn’t even ask me which dog was getting helped! I am very disappointed how I and my dog were treated and I will not be returning!

Our cat took a turn for the worse while we were visiting friends, and Southern Utah Animal Hospital is the only vet we found that was willing to help her cross the rainbow bridge. She passed away on the way to the vet, but they helped us make arrangements to get her cremated and we're great to work with.

My 15 year old dachshund had a successful leg amputation surgery here to remove a tumor. They were professional and courteous throughout the 5 month process of getting an estimate, scheduling from out of state, pre-op conversations, the day of the operation, and phone call follow ups post-op a few days later. It was also 90% more affordable than vets I reached out to in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Vet care where I live is exponentially more expensive than it is in Utah, so when visiting family I requested and estimate from Southern Utah Animal Hospital for the cost of a leg amputation for my senior dog. They quickly answered without making me jump through hoops or requesting a consult appointment - which was what happened at 90% of other vets I tried to get estimates from. They were booked out a few months and I hadn't fully committed to getting the surgery done due to my dog's age. Fast forward a few months, I decided to commit and schedule. They were able to do so over the phone without requiring consult appointments, xrays, or additional tests. They answered all my questions about traveling post op since we would be coming from out of state. They were booked out a month or so and said they would follow up the week before surgery. A week before surgery, I got some bloodwork done locally to ensure in the time that has elapsed he was still fit for surgery and called the vet to confirm the process for the day of surgery and get any pre-op information. The day of surgery the office the process was incredibly relaxed at drop off. The surgeon looked to confirm full amputation was necessary. Pick up was hectic as they were very busy, but all of my discharge questions were answered. I called a few days later with some concerns to make sure that it wasn't anything to worry about and they were able to explain over the phone that many of the things were normal as a result of the invasiveness of the surgery. We are less than a month post op, stiches removed, and he is hopping around wonderfully, completely healed and just waiting for the hair to grow back. I was very nervous to go after reading some of the negative reviews, but a facility that does invasive surgery will have things go wrong, but in our case it was a successful surgery on a 15 year old dog with no issues or complications at all, so would highly recommend.
