How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Thank you to Dr. Melissa Johnson, Liz and Brian for taking such good care of my baby, Pee Wee, and for helping making that difficult decision - a little less difficult. I’ve feared for years how the end would happen - and as much as we would like to be in complete control of all the details, sometimes it comes as a surprise and all we can do is try to make the best with what we are given. Although I never expected my last moments with my baby to be in an emergency clinic, they made sure his transition was peaceful. Dr. Johnson allowed me to stay in the private room with my baby in my arms on the couch, as opposed to the open floor by himself. She did not rush me, gave me her professional opinion on what would be best for him, and gave me the space and attention to ask any questions I had. When it came time to move forward with administering the euthanasia, they were quiet and quick. My baby was a scaredy cat and it meant everything to me that they were all very cautious and thoughtful to be sure to keep him at peace and comfortable. About a week later, they sent me a card that everyone had signed with kind words. That meant so much to me. They truly care. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

This place is great and the staff is amazing. Our dog needed an emergency surgery and Dr. Melissa Johnson & the staff were excellent. You can tell that this is their passion not just a job. They treat you like family. You are welcome to be with your pet 100% of the time. This is a new concept and fairly new in Sugar Land. You walk in and they take care of your pet first. Someone else comes to you and take care of your information while the Dr is helping your pet. This is an emergency clinic only so they handle the emergency first, your pet is their first concern however they also have people making sure you are also comfortable. It is clear to them that your pet is part of the family and the entire family stays together. Our dog was up in a few house. Dr. Johnson surgical skill are amazing, they way she handle the entire process show clearly this is her passion. Not only you can tell she is a great surgeon but the way she managed herself with the staff, the pets and the pet owners, showed this is a great human being. We were there for several hours and I had the opportunity to watched how this place was running. I don’t have enough words to thank them for all they did. In terms of finances, no surprises either. They are totally transparent with their charges beforehand. They even tell you what/how much could be the additional charges if needed. In our case they didn’t do everything they thought they were going to do and a reimbursement of the charges was done immediately. From the clinical to the business aspect this place is amazing. Highly recommended!!! I hope your pet don’t need to use this place but in case of an emergency, just go there. I know I keep repeating myself, but they were AWESOME.

Our vet referred us to VEG last night after our small dog, Rosie, swallowed whole a piece of chicken breast including the 4 inch sharp wood skewer in the middle of it. It’s a very nice, big new facility with good parking. Great staff and well equipped. There were a number of other animals there but we still got seen right when we walked in. Nurses Jackie and Victoria took wonderfully good care of Rosie, and Dr. Randa Patrick, right after operating on another dog, scoped out the skewer like it was just another day at the office. I can’t imagine working in a place where you have no idea what is coming through the door next, but the VEG staff were calm, friendly and quick and knew what to do. We stayed with Rosie the whole time and overall just a great experience (that I hope to not have again).

Excellent place, people and service!! So grateful for their attentive, expert care. They were so sweet with my son too, he had a little spot to color or grab a snack and was able to pretend to be a vet for the morning :-)
