How to Save Money at VCA Stafford Oaks Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought in a stray kitten I found last month for a new pet exam and everybody was so friendly and nice to both me and the kitten. She was very comfortable there and liked exploring the exam room. There were even other vet techs who came into the room when they heard there was a female orange tabby in the room and everybody just wanted to coo over her. They gave her first month’s dose of flea/tick medicine for free and she was too little for the heart worm but they put it in her record that when she is big enough for it that it will also be free. I had to bring in her fecal sample at a later day to get her checked for parasites and they texted and called me with her results in less than 48 hours! My last vet I had to hound to get the results. I love this vet and I’ve already recommended them to the other pet owners I know in Houston.

I have been taking my pets to this vet clinic since 2011 and our experience w Dr. Brady was ALWAYS beyond superb! I was concerned when the owner sold out to VCA, but as long as Brady was there, we continued to have superior service. My most recent experience, not so much. The staff is friendly, engaging, and they genuinely love the animals! My experience w Dr. Walter was subpar at best. To be fair an emergency client came in while Oliver was getting his annual check-up, but I paid $85 for an office visit that never happened. The basic look at the teeth and in the ears, feel the gut, look in the eyes exam NEVER HAPPENED. Then there is the blood work. We are a week out and I have yet to receive a call and when I go online, it’s like his blood work was never registered. Another $167 I wasted at this place. Bottom line, I wouldn’t take my alcoholic uncle to this place for a basic IV drip!

Doctor Walter and staff are all very friendly and nice! They take good care of your pets. My White dog has never had issues going to vets before but he especially enjoys coming here I have noticed.

Dr. Puksta and her team worked hard to save my very anemic kitten giving him a life saving blood transfusion. He is now thriving because of their care! The Receptionist always greet me with a smile and know my fur babies by name and the Technicians and Tech Assistants truly love my pets like they’re part of their own family! Strongly recommend this hospital!

Honestly, I will never come back here. I have a Rottweiler and upon arrival of my appointment we were sat in the patient room. We waited over 35 minutes to be seen. Mind you, I had an appointment, so why did it take over 35 minutes for someone to come in and speak with me. I told them my dog has recurring ear infections and she’s aging so i want to ensure her hips are okay because she limps every so often. The vet finally came into the room after an hour and didn’t even conduct an exam on my Rottweiler. The vet assistant was more hands on than the vet. He Just provided the annual shots and left. Did not address any of the concerns i mentioned and I had a bill of $700. They called me to ask about my experience, i made the complaint, and they said it would be addressed and they would call me back. Here we are 4 months later.. no call back. This vet clinic has changed since the VCA takeover . I don’t recommend it.
