How to Save Money at Specialty Veterinary Pharmacy

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dear Mr Martinez and Team, I can’t thank you enough for providing a cure for my Siberian Husky’s Giardia❣️🤗🥰 In March of 2024, Roxy was 8 months old and struggling with Giardia since we got here from an AKC breeder! Roxy had a wellness exam, the very next day of taking delivery of her. The next day we found out that she had Giardia, she was loaded with it! The vet prescribed the usual meds for it, and they didn’t work. We went through many, many rounds of meds, and the Giardia was still there! Month after month of sleepless nights, cleaning accidents in the home, disinfecting everything, picking up her poop and disposing of it, wore us down…and my vet was giving up hope, she had done everything that she could. I was beside myself with the thought that I was facing having to put Roxy down. Giardia was destroying my little girl. So I prayed mightily…and begged my vet to try and find another way to cure this parasite. When my vet called me to say that she had consulted with another doctor, who told her about Secnidazole, I was elated! She said that it hadn’t been used on dogs, but has worked wonders on cats! I was all in, yes, let’s try it! That’s how I came to SVPMEDS! The vet prescribed two treatments, the second one was to be given two weeks after the first. Roxy felt under the weather for about 4 hours after each treatment. Her nose would be warm and she was tired. But then she slowly came out of that state and returned to normal. Two weeks after the first treatment, I had her stool tested, and it was completely negative! I did the same thing after the second treatment, and it was completely negative! And to be sure, I’ve had her stool tested several times since, and she is clean! Hallelujah 🙏 After the first treatment, she became a new dog, happy go lucky, and not fearing going potty! I’m so thankful to the Lord, my vet and to SVPMEDS🙏. My vet recently told me that after Roxy’s success, she has used Secnidozole on some other tough cases, with success! I want to hug each and every one of you at SVPMEDS, for saving Roxy❣️🤗. You folks were awesome to work with! You answered all of my questions, and verified the dosage for my dogs weight. It was peace of mind for me to have the dosage verified! Mistakes can happen, and I didn’t want my little girl to be over or under medicated. So thank you for that! Thank you, and Many Blessings to you all🙏

This was my first order with SVP, and it was awesome! The techs could not have been more helpful, very knowledgeable, patient and polite. My order was delivered well before my expectations (pharmacy I previously used could take 7 to 10 business days), and SVP pricing is well below what I was paying, for the same product. The compounding is so important for my cat, as he will not eat when he is in pain from his stomatitis. Subsequently, when he won't eat, I have to give him the oral liquid pain med. I couldn't be happier with this first order, and I will certainly continue to order with SVP. And, they are local, which is a huge plus in my opinion! I highly recommend SVP!

My dog needs compounded medicine for heart issues. We've been buying from SVP for a couple of years now and have never been disappointed with their service! We've never received a package later than expected, which is so important with medication for serious issues. Their representatives are always friendly and ready to assist when you call in. I highly recommend SVP.

Between SVG and my vet they both dropped the ball. I put in the order and chose overnight shipping. The confirmation after ordering (on a Thursday after lunch) it says it wouldn’t make it until Monday. I called and told them to cancel the shipping that I would just pick it up. I was told they would get right on the order and request the authorization from the vet. My vet told me to get the prescription in asap so they could approve it, that’s what I did. Two hours after talking to someone at SVG I got an email saying they requested the authorization via email. The next day I get another update that they had requested it again. One would think they would call know that it was dire to get this filled. I called the vet and they weren’t even set up in a portal with them so they had no idea it was even sent to them! Later in the day I get a call from a guy at SVG saying I needed to confirm all my info and speak to a pharmacist for a consultation, they left me on hold for almost 10 minutes and someone answered the phone like I called them; I had to explain that I was on hold and go through all the info again. Late yesterday afternoon I get an update that the prescription is ready, they were about to close so I couldn’t go get it until today. Today when I got there it wasn’t even ready for pickup! While I was waiting I noticed on their wall they have a CATS poster with basically their mission statement on it and I couldn’t help but think how far they missed the mark on our order. What a mess.

I have a Sassy Shitzu that for years now has been taking medication for seizures. Yet I would give her the pill that was prescribed for her in cheese, put it in the back of her throat, or even try in her food. But somehow I would find the pill somewhere meaning she did not take it. Which meant she would have many seizures. So I spoke with my veterinarian about it and he sent her prescription to SPV. Now Sassy takes her medication daily with no problems. It is now in liquid form, Bacon flavored to be exact and I put it in a syringe and open her mouth and it’s done. No more fighting her or wondering if she took her medicine. And so far she has not had any seizures. It’s very easy to refill too. I am super satisfied.
