How to Save Money at VCA Animal Hospitals Urgent Care - Northwest San Antonio
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My girl had a really bad split nail that was causing her pain, and I got referred to VCA to treat it because I couldn’t wait to take her to a primary care. Their facility is very neat and clean. We didn’t have to wait long at all. The staff is so nice and helpful. Dr. Tippin treated my girl, with the help of Jessica and Kelly. They worked with my budget and were very transparent with the treatment plan. We were in and out fairly quickly, and I would definitely recommend coming here for urgent care needs with your pet. Thank you again VCA, Dr. Tippin and staff!

I am so grateful to Zack, Dr. Barrera and Jessica! We had a scary morning when my “grand-dog” woke up with diarrhea and vomiting after stealing and a chicken leg last night! Our regular vet told us to find an emergency vet and we chose this fantastic clinic! Easy online check in. Immediately placed in a comfortable exam room. Coffee and snack bar to enjoy as needed. Staff were incredibly attentive, knowledgeable and kind. Pricing breakdown provided from the start. CareCredit accepted! Made our fearful dog comfortable with a light sedative so they could perform a comfortable X-ray. We were updated throughout the process and left with our baby girl comfortable and on the mend. Such a relief! Thank you Thank you Thank you!

I contacted a nearby veterinary hospital due to my dog's illness and loss of appetite. Unfortunately, they were fully booked and referred me to VCA Animal Hospital Urgent Care, located 22 minutes away from my residence. Upon calling, the VCA staff greeted me warmly and informed me of a 2-hour wait, offering to place me on the waiting list. Upon being called, I was briefed on available treatments and their associated costs, beginning with preliminary examinations and escalating as needed to identify the underlying issue. The staff's amiability and attentiveness helped my unwell dog feel at ease. The comprehensive care provided to my dog included blood tests, medication, intravenous therapy, injections, a prescription for additional medication, and specialized dietary recommendations. I was deeply impressed by the team's dedication to my pet's well-being and wholeheartedly endorse their services for pets in distress.

My first time to this hospital and it was a pleasant experience.Genuinely honest people I say this because I’m one of those pet parents who will pay for anything to get my pet healthy and happy. They had the opportunity and didn’t I am grateful 🥹 the economy is bad so I definitely recommend them. They treated her with kindness very gentle. The tech was awesome for educating me on techniques with my new born kitten. Katie was very informative about insurance and healthy foods for her as well as when to get it. Dr. larue was warm and welcoming open to my questions and concerns, very mindful of me and my pet in her presence it’s hard to find people these days who love there job and truly care and I got that beautiful vibe from her. Thank you all so much 🥹

We normally see Becker on I10 but they had a 6+ hour wait and suggested this location. I couldn't be more pleased. We were we told hour wait, I received a text within 10 mins to start heading to them. We were directly greeted at the door by Jessica escorted to our room for eval. The vet she listed to our concerns had a course of action before even taking mia to the back but also gave a second opinion to an issue we were told about. Mia, my girl with a rip nail from the declaw was given a stylish bandana, a heart bandage from the sedation and we were escorted to the car and had assistance with ensuring a safe car load. They have continued excellent experience. Thank you, since we have moved your location is actually closer as well. Highly recommend them, my mia isn't a small girl she is an amstaff. It takes special personnel to care for injured large breeds. Thank you!
