How to Save Money at Northwood Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The well informed staff at this clinic is absolutely wonderful and has treated my pup and I like family since day 1. I have been a life long exotic animal keeper (as well as dogs) and this is by far THE BEST veterinary experience I have had in San Antonio. I have multiple clinics in my area and still choose a 40 minutes for this team. The grooming services that Cat offers are extraordinary! She has never failed to amaze me with her quality of work and the passion she shows for her craft. Her work speaks for itself. She treats all her clients with love and I am always at ease knowing my dog is safe with her. I HIGHLY recommend this clinic to anyone in the area.

I took my puppy-child Simon in for a well visit, vaccines, and a groom. I was a bit hesitant because no groomer has ever been able to work with him. (He's aggressive 🤦🏻‍♀️) The staff knew exactly what do and their groomer, Cat, did such an amazing job! I'm beyond thrilled! I will definitely be bringing Simon back for all his care! 🫶🏼

NOT a fear free vet. Vet techs impatient and rude. They do not like anxious pets and unnecessarily manhandle them. We took in our large dog for a popping sound in the leg. The vet tech dragged and pulled her to the back WHILE SHE WAS LIMPING. All because she was a little anxious and didnt want to leave us. My smaller dog got wrestled onto the table with a towel by another impatient vet tech and expressed everywhere because she was so frightened. We didn’t have issues with the vet before that incident but we do now. The vet condoned how she was handled lol. They both told me I was “encouraging bad behavior” because I could see how terrified my dog was and tried comforting her. She wasn’t biting, she was just super anxious and climbing on my sister avoiding the tech prior to being wrestled. When our larger dog had her surgery for the popping sound there, they did the bare minimum. Gave us terrible post care instructions, never followed up, we had to pester the vet for ANY information. But when it came time for an x ray that was $600+ they were very responsive. They then don’t call us back with the results lol we waited months for them to tell us to get ANOTHER x ray because too much time had passed. Yet, they never talked to us about the first lol. Very expensive with weird fees now. I don’t recommend unless your dog loves going to the vet. But really I don’t recommend at all. Nicer vets and lower costs at low cost and mobile clinics.

Everyone at Northwood was helpful and caring. Amanda was my first point of contact. I was looking for a new veterinarian for my dog and Amanda scheduled me within the hour. She and Brandon were very sympathetic and showed the care and compassion I needed to get through a difficult event. Doctor Rivera was knowledgeable and kindly helped me to understand my options in caring for my pet. I will always come back to Northwood and am thankful for the tender care they provided me and my friendly four legged friend.

I have had such a great experience with the staff at Northwoods. I have to take my dog in 1x week for fluids, of which she hates, but Brandon has been so sweet with her, that he makes me feel confident that they are making the experience as pleasant as possible. Brandon always has a smile & is very professional. I look forward to meeting the new doctor next month. So far, he has an excellent staff Amanda, at the front desk, has been very accommodating to our scheduling needs. Even when I have called at the last minute to reschedule. She has always been very pleasant & had a great attitude.
