How to Save Money at Heritage Oaks Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My son took his dog in for diarrhea (two days). Dr. Byrd came in looked him over and had the tech bring in a quote for over $900. Tried to put him on a very expensive and long-term medication as well. When my son expressed concern, the tech came in and out several times re-writing quotes! Never once did Dr Byrd come back in and try to explain or discuss what the best avenue would be if the full expense of testing couldn’t be incurred. Once the tests were run, she had her tech come in and convey results. Very unprofessional, negligent and shady. My son had a wonderful experience with another Veterinarian the first time he came. He is now having records sent to another practice. If Dr.Byrd is the owner, seems that this is the protocol and philosophy. We are extremely disappointed and would not recommend this practice.

Dr. Byrd has been caring for my two Boxers for three years. While the office is a bit of a drive for me, the trade off is the great care the staff provides. The techs and receptionists are fantastic. We were there on 23 May, and saw Dr. Sutter for the first time. She has the same caring personality as Dr. Byrd, and I am so glad to have found their office! I wholeheartedly recommend Heritage Oaks Animal Hospital.

Great wellness visit for our grand dog today at Heritage Oaks off Evans Rd. We usually see Dr. Byrd at Northern Oaks but they had an opening closer to me at new Heritage Oaks. The facility is clean, modern and pet friendly. The staff were engaging and we loved seeing our vet Dr. Byrd. I even got to tour NEST next door for possible future activities or overnight stays for our pup. They are so creative with many offering in their new facility. This is a great vet option with knowledgeable staff.

Never take your pet here if you have an emergency. I walked in with my dog that poison control told me to take to the nearest vet hospital. The receptionist didn’t greet me or even acknowledge I was there. After what felt like 10 minutes of being on the phone she finally hung up and then I explained the situation. She then tells me they don’t have any availability that day then looks me up and down and says just so you know it’ll be at least $189 today but I still need to see if we can squeeze you in this afternoon. Excuse me for not dressing up and instead focusing on taking my dog to the nearest hospital for emergent care. Mind you I was in leggings and a tshirt with no holes or stains. When I realized she wasn’t going to be helpful I asked her where the nearest clinic is that could help me. She said I don’t know somewhere down the street? My dog is potentially having a serious medical issue and you’re telling me you can’t help me and you can’t tell me anywhere else to go? Honestly the worst experience I’ve ever had with any vet ever. I hope karma comes and bites that receptionist for being so rude and unhelpful in a very stressful and emotionally charged situation. Thankfully my vet is a little up the road and moved everything around to take us in immediately so if anyone needs a recommendation of a place that will actually help your dog let me know and I will gladly give it to you. Don’t waste your time or money on this quack of a “animal hospital” Update: The owner of the hospital reached out and was very apologetic and understands where I was coming from so I’ve increased my rating. The only vet there was in surgery and couldn’t see my dog at the time, but she explained in any other situation she would have seen an emergent case. She also let me know that they will do retraining on making sure to greet people when they come in and giving out referrals for other places nearby that might be able to help in case they aren’t available. Overall I feel like the vet herself is probably a great veterinarian and the rest of the staff is probably good so if you have the receptionist I had maybe just ask for the vet herself because she seems like she really cares about the animals. She checked to see how my dog was doing throughout the phone call. I probably won’t be back, but I wouldn’t tell anyone not to go there anymore.

I couldn’t ask for a better place for my sweet girl. She loves going and I give it all to the caring and friendly staff. Kristen and Dr Sutter are her absolute favorite and I can’t thank them enough for how much compassion and care they give her and always go the extra mile.
