How to Save Money at Eagle Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’m glad that Eagle Vet Hospital took me and my pup last minute. It’s hard to find walk-in vets nowadays especially if you’re not a local in SA. My dog had colitis and conjunctivitis and needed to be seen asap, I called this place and thankfully they accomodated me. The techs were so gentle and nice to my dog, and the Dr. was so thorough about the approach on the plan of care. He gave me options which is rarely heard of. In my past experiences, I really only had no involvement as to the specifics of my dog’s treatment. But Dr. Erik Montelongo gave me options on how to proceed, if I wanted to take a slow step-by-step approach or go the all-in do-all-testing approach, taking into consideration my opinions which ultimately helped me make a decision that’s best for my pup and me, financially speaking. On top of all these, the vet clinic itself is clean and well designed. The interior is homey, unlike most vets that feel too sterile. This felt more like a home or a cafe if that makes sense. They had a coffee/snack station which is a plus. Overall, I would recommend this clinic.

Eagle is always amazing. I have all of my pets and fosters seen by them. I'm constantly calling for different things and the techs and doctors are so patient and caring. My dogs never exhibit fear when coming to this vet. Even my cat was relaxed just tucked up under my arm. I recommend everyone to come here. And thank you again Eagle Vet Staff for being so patient with me, my pets, and fosters! 🩵

I arrived early with my neighbors dog for a vaccine. I waited 15 minutes and had to go up and ask what the wait is for. Was not apologized to, just told she will go look. She then took my dog back and was gone for literally 60 seconds. When she returned she said there was a behavior case and all hands were on deck. How shocking! It's a vets office. They need to learn how to handle paying customers that show up on time for a 60 second visit.

I would recommend Dr. Christopher Trust no matter how big or small the issue. My cat has made a full recovery under Dr. Trust’s care after experiencing a scary medical crisis on two separate occasions with the prognosis initially looking very poor. My cat first presented with jaundice and was hospitalized in 2019 when Dr. Trust was working at a different clinic. I relocated to another city since 2019, so when my cat had jaundice and required a hospitalization again last March, I took him to a local emergency vet. His regular vet was not equipped to manage his condition, and I was not sure where to take him to follow up after he was discharged. Thinking back to 2019, I figured his best shot at getting healthy was to take him back to see Dr. Trust. I am so glad I have reestablished my cat’s care with him. Due to Dr. Trust’s knowledge and expertise in veterinary care, my cat is recovering well again. The commute to San Antonio for appointments is worth knowing my cat is in excellent hands. Thank you Dr. Trust and to the rest of the staff at Eagle Veterinary Hospital for taking such good care of Jasper!

Eagle Vet has been our go-to for 6 years now. They have taken care of all of our kitties, from +20 olds, several cats with complex medical conditions, a foster fail family, and one that just showed up one day. Thank you cat distribution system. They are knowledgeable, curious, and compassionate. Everything you want in a vet.
