How to Save Money at Animal Emergency Room

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very compassionate veterinary clinic. We would definitely recommend them. They were very professional and attentive to our pets unfortunate outcome. We appreciate their support and compassion during a very difficult and abrupt loss. Thanks for all that y'all do! RIP Tone 🕊️🙏 If I could share... The universe works in mysterious ways. We (as a new couple) found Tone walking as a small puppy down Fredericksburg Rd at the bus stop near this exact clinic 8.5 yrs ago. We cared for him and took him in, after no owners were ever found. Endless adventures later. It was literally full circle for our beloved dog. 💫 Where we found him, we lost him. In the (almost) exact same spot he was rescued. If that's not a sign idk what is. This whole experience was so awakening. What's meant to be will truly be. Thanks for reading 🫶

First time ever having to use them, and they were all amazing. They saved my boy from a snake bite! And now he’s happy and on the road to recovery! Thank you everyone that took care of Tonka

A really amazing emergency room for animals. Took my dog there after trying several different other vets that all had 3+ hour wait time. Was seen within 30 minutes. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Vet came out to talk to us several times and was very knowledgeable. Is now my go-to for any future pet emergencies!

Thank you to everyone at AER . I took my Senior Dog in as she was not doing well and I already knew her time with me was coming to an end. Everyone was so compassionate and understanding and helped me every step of the way. She crossed the rainbow bridge and I felt as if I was surrounded by family. I received a sympathy card in the mail, everyone signed it and offered condolences. It meant so much to US. I will always be grateful for everything they did for me and my precious Girl 💕

Middle of the night tech staff are wonderful but the positive review stops there. The vets lack compassion and empathy and act like you are wasting their time with basic questions. The front desk staff during the day seem to have a similar view. I dropped off a foster dog due to some very concerning health symptoms in the middle of the night and called the next morning asking for an update. THEY COULD NOT FIND HIS PAPERWORK. Zero record of him staying there and none of the staff knew where he was. The girl on the phone said he must have been transported back to ACS to be monitored but no one was sure. I understand that there was a shift change but it is extremely careless to simply not know where a dog is or have any record of them staying there. It shouldn’t matter if the dog is a pet or a foster! Very disorganized and dysfunctional office
