How to Save Money at Alamo Ranch Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We've been taking our 2 cats and 2 dogs here since moving from Conyers, GA in 2017. While big city anything is drastically different from its rural counterpart, we've had very good experiences with the vets and staff here. We recently lost one of our cats and they were all very kind. During my last visit the office's internet and payment processing was down, but I watched the staff allow multiple people pick up their pets' medications and still keep their appointments, stating they'd obtain payment later. I thought that was incredibly compassionate - I'm a neurotic, over-bearing pet parent and if I'd been turned away during that time I would have lost it. 😅

Wonderful experience with Dr. Shannon here, who has been caring for my two senior dogs for the past few years. I found out my dog had cancer in 2022 and I can’t think of a better or more caring vet to have guided me through this experience. She has been extremely helpful providing options, explanations and follow-up responses to my questions as we navigate my dog’s treatment. I truly appreciate her level of attention and detail — I know I’ve kept her on the phone for 20 minutes at a time asking every possible question about my dog’s health. She has also helped us with referrals when our needs are beyond her scope, and her referrals for major surgery and oncology have gone very well for my dog. The front desk staff know me and my dogs by name, and I can’t thank them enough for being patient with us. My dog developed high anxiety at vet visits following a year with multiple surgeries, bloodwork appointments, ultrasounds, x-rays and more. She is LOUD in the waiting room and I’m completely unable to calm her down. The ladies at the front desk still greet her with smiles and pets and never get upset or irritated by her behavior. My other dog is shy and nervous, and the doctors and staff always treat him with a nice, calm and comforting demeanor that helps him feel at ease. I’m so glad to have found this vet and highly recommend them! We’ll be moving at the end of this year and I’m sad to leave them behind.

I’ve been taking my dogs to Alamo Ranch Animal hospital since it opened. My senior dog, of 15 years has always been treated so amazing there. She had a traumatic event 7 years ago and she was treated here. Now up in age, she is still treated here and the doctors are so gentle and kind with her. I appreciate that treatment options are provided and you don’t feel forced to do something you can’t afford at the moment. Definitely recommend this vet!

I can't enough good things about AR animal hospital, the entire staff, and in particular Dr Shannon. We only had two interactions, but she is truly amazing and helped us navigate our tough situation to say goodbye my best friend. So thankful for having such a warm environment and I can't say thank you enough.

update: Amazing response! Joseph called and had puppy in this afternoon. Met Dr. Shannon and yes, puppy has ear infection…. I knew it😊. Short check up and we will make a proper appointment for shots later. But I so appreciate the attention she received. Thanks to all for caring.
