How to Save Money at UrgentVet - West Plano

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff here is amazing. They are thorough, knowledgeable, and friendly. My Dane had an issue with his nose that other vets couldn’t figure out. Brought him here and the doctor thought of something the other vets didn’t. Now he’s doing great. I will definitely bring my pets back!

I very much appreciate how quickly they took me in. The tech was friendly and listened to my slightly panicked explanation. The visit was a breath of relief invited by the calm approach, conversation, and action between the Vet, his team, and myself (and especially the pets for George). Thanks to them my cat got some helpful medication, a treatment plan that was laid out, and helpful recommendations. George is resting well at home and showing signs of feeling better. We are so thankful for their help.

Very grateful that these guys are open late.! My English bulldog started scratching his ear uncontrollably and we noticed his ears were draining. We’ve lost a bulldog before, so we freak out with anything going on with him.! They got us in fast, explained everything and were very nice and patient (even if we were the one’s who show up right before closing, sorry ☹️). But our boy is able to rest now, and we feel better that he was able to be treated! Thank you so much Urgent Vet (Dr. Randle and Chandler ❤️)

Although my baby and I were waiting there for quite some time to be seen by the vet, everyone was so incredibly kind to both me and my dog. They took the time to let her come to them, rather than rushing through treatment and testing and freaking her out in the process. We were there past closing and the staff STILL took their time and were incredibly patient in explaining her treatment to me in detail and making sure that Lily would be okay to go home. The vet gave me a TON of helpful info that she absolutely didn’t have to; she genuinely just cared for Lily’s long-term health and happiness outside of their clinic. I even got a phone call the next day checking in and making sure that Lily was still doing alright, and they offered any help in future issues regarding her recent treatment as well. All in all, an incredible experience (all things considered LOL) with friendly staff, a price that seemed like a steal for the care and medication received, and treatment above and beyond what was required of the vet and tech staff. I wish I could make them my primary vet and will immediately take my pets here if anything ever arises going forward. Thank you, UrgentVet!!

Our Bonnie (female tabby) started to have a problem urinating and just laying around extremely lethargic. Our vet was closed of course because it was after hours. The office was very Nice and very big. They got her right in and started getting her some relief. Unfortunately cost for emergency care is always in the back of your mind and it was so affordable it was insane. Our baby is on her way to recovery. The staff was fantastic. They were very knowledgeable and extremely helpful and caring. I would recommend this location to anyone who needs emergency care for their babies. Thank you so much for taking care of our Bonnie.
