How to Save Money at Paws & Claws Animal Hospital and Holistic Pet Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Shawn & all his staff are so wonderful and caring! We have trusted Dr. Shawn's advice & treatments with our 2 dogs, our daughters 2 dogs. I like his more holistic approach rather than just pumping animals with medications and sending people on their way. If you are on the fence about going to Paws & Claws - Just GO!!! You won't be sorry! ****Paws & Claws is the only place I will ever take my fur babies. He has helped me in numerous ways with my pets. Don't hesitate to call!!!

The girls in the front were so welcoming and sweet to the dogs. Excited to meet a vet that better aligns with my holistic goals for my fur babies. Really felt he took the time to listen to my concerns and build a plan moving forward.

You guys are not only super kind, prompt in your email replies, but also knowledgeable and exceptionally understanding. You are not pushy on treatments and your holistic approach to pet health sets you apart. I love how you prioritize the well-being of the whole body. I appreciate having a like-minded vet hospital to go to that provides top-notch care. Thank you Paws & Claws Team! Five furry paws up!

Our dog, Buck, was rescued in 2020 and unfortunately had a very negative visit to the vet early in life. We have spent years trying to find a clinic that he would even walk into without extreme anxiety. Paws & Claws is that clinic! We are SO grateful to have found them. Buck is much happier and healthier for being a patient here. Moreover, he is calm and comfortable in the clinic because they are all patient, sincerely kind and enthusiastic about their job. That was not our experience elsewhere. I cannot recommend Dr. Messonnier and his team highly enough. If I could give more than 5 stars I would!

I took my lab, Nala, there about 3 weeks ago, she was 10 and had arthritis and she was limping. A few weeks before I just found out she had a huge tumor, that's the reason I took her there. I was hoping for a relief for her in her last days/weeks/month. When Dr. Shawn saw Nala, she was laying down on the floor, he barely looked at her, didn't get close to her, didn't ask her to stand up and evaluate her. He just said: she looks fine. Fine??? Really??? Her belly was huge, the tumor pushed her stomach close to her spine, I believe he saw it on the x-ray that I sent, even if he had not seen it, as a doctor, he would have seen an abnormality, to say the least, just by looking at her. The assistant came with a list of supplements and vitamins 14 to be exact, plus a laser treatment ( i just did 1 session that day) but I was not informed which one would be better either, if there were priority. I was so desperate to help my dog that I accepted all. I spent over $1300 that day, my dog died on the next week. This is not because she died, even before that happens I felt like it was all about money, not for her well being. I'd have spent so much more if I could, at least , make her feel better. I do not recommend this place, I felt this way right after getting home, but now after a couple weeks after her passing, I'm 100% sure that I was right. Plus, if you have the chance to go beyond the first room, you wouldn't be satisfied overall and there was a roach in the restroom.
