How to Save Money at Thrive Pet Healthcare (New Braunfels)

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would like to thank the staff and vet at thrive. My cat Lady passed away they did everything they could and told me everything I could do to save her life. When the blood work came back not good the Vet had the sweetest consideration and did not stop til she could find me the most affordable way to end her suffering. My soul is hurting but is so thankful for y'all! I will be bringing my cats to get checked up here forever. Again thank you so much! This was her my little shoulder cat!

Thrive is our go to!! Their prices are unbeatable, and they are so very friendly. My dogs are not fans of the vet, but they made sure to make us feel welcomed and comfortable! If I could give them more stars I would. Thank you thrive for our best experiences!

You have to schedule an appt. & pay the exam fee before they will tell you what they charge for each vaccine. I called other Vet. clinics in town and they are all willing to give you pricing over the phone on the cost of each vaccine that a dog typically needs annually. Thrive Pet Healthcare sounds like a SCAM to me.

Took our newly adopted kitten here for an exam and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. Will definitely take our little Felix back and would definitely recommend to others based on how awesome the atmosphere is. Very knowledgeable and warm staff.

I'm very late making this review (2 years too late) but I feel the need to. My mother and me had gone to Thrive after my puppy (6 months old) had stopped eating and showed signs of pain when opening his mouth in general. We had gone to Thrive in Seguine and they diagnosed him with Masticatory Myositis and prescribed 10mg of Prednisone but we had decided to go to the Thrive in New Braunfels since the drive to Seguine was too far. My first appointment there we met with Dr. Julio Montero and he was very patient and even fed my puppy (Kane) some cheese whiz, he had decided that the next appointment Kane would get an x-ray done on his jaw (where there was a bump on his left side). Next appointment comes and he does multiple X-rays and doesn't yet give a diagnosis, the same appointment he had prescribed Kane 5mg more of Prednisone making it 15mg. Montero was a really good guy he had payed for some of Kanes Prednisone and prayed for Kane, but even after those 3 appointments and the Prednisone Kane continued to get worse, I had to give him a pill and a half twice a day, he was gaining weight but wasn't really growing in height (he was still the same size he was when he was six months but only gaining weight), he started losing muscle in his head and I was able to see the shape of his skull more and more every passing week. After realizing that Kane wasn't getting any better Montero had sent us to what we thought was gonna be a specialist who would actually be able to tell us what Kane had, turns out it was a pain management specialist and we had drove an hour and a half and spent quite a bit on the appointment only to receive nothing that had to do with diagnosing Kane or even any medication that would help. After visiting the specialist we had gone back to Montero for a follow-up appointment and talked to him about how we thought it was a specialist who would be able to diagnose Kane but he had passed it off as a “miscommunication”. After that we had started losing hope. We didn't know what to do anymore, we couldn't afford to keep going to specialists and Kane couldn't be off the Prednisone for more than a day without being in pain. All of this had happened in 3 months. The Prednisone was just delaying his death. He was in constant pain and couldn't run or jump so my and my mom had come to the decision to put him down. The night before we were going to put him down he was restless, he didn't wanna lay down let alone sleep so I had left a blanket for him to lay on and I had gone to sleep. I had woken up early that morning and he was still sitting in the same place, my mom had told me that he had barely moved from that spot all night. That day we were going to put him to rest after my mom got off from work, I had let him outside to use the restroom and he didn't move around much just went down that stairs and say there, I had to carry him in. For that next couple hours he just sat with me. I remember near noon I think I had put him in my sister's room and gone to the restroom and as I was coming out my sister called for me saying “Somethings wrong with Kane” as I walked in there I could see Kane laying flat on the floor and his body was spasming. I remember knocking my hand on his leg hoping he would get up, I remember calling my mom crying, I also remember wrapping his body in a blanket. My mom had gotten home an hour after I called her, I had sat with his body until she got home. While we dropped him off at thrive (we were getting him cremated) my mom had asked me if I wanted to let them do an autopsy, I really didn't want to but I also wanted to know what was wrong with him and what i could've done. I had decided yes and my mom told them that they could do an autopsy before the cremation. I remember going to pick up his ashes and they were very sweet and even wrote a card to us. But two vet visits and one visit to a “specialist” and we never found out what was wrong. In May it'll be two years since then and we never got an update on the autopsy. I think Montero is a good person but he just wasn't good as a Veterinarian.
