How to Save Money at Westbury Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I first called Westbury Animal Hospital and spoke to a customer service representative. She was so calm and friendly that it helped me relax. The following week my cat, Olive, ended up being very sickly. I took her to the ER clinic since it was a Sunday morning. There was no wait at all. They immediately put us in an exam room. They first took my cat to do some vitals. Before they continued, they explained that my cat probably had neurological issues that could require bigger equipment like an MRI that they did not have at their clinic. They did not want me to pay for the visit here just to have to go to another clinic and pay the fee again. So very thoughtful of them. I ended up not going for the MRI. After they finished the exam, they explained all my options. Eventually we opted to put my cat to sleep. They then moved us to a very comfortable room with a couch and tissues, where we could have some extra privacy and stay a little longer. We got to cuddle with kitty and got to let them know when we were ready to proceed. Everyone was so knowledgeable, patient, calm, polite, understanding, and friendly – especially Dr. Geistert. It ended up being a very special moment for me and my cat. A few days later I got a sympathy card in the mail from the clinic with a handwritten note by Dr. Geistert. What a very special and personal touch in our very face paced world. All their kindness has been noticed and will go a long way. When I am ready to get another pet, I will for sure use this clinic for my regular vet needs from now on. Thank you so much for taking such great care of my cat, Olive, and me.

Amazing vet and staff! From the front desk to everyone my pup and I encountered were all so sweet and amazing! My dog is reactive to men and other dogs and they were very kind and welcoming with their adjustments to work with him! We had a female vet and vet tech and even got escorted out a side door to avoid other dogs! I was recommended this place by my Pilates studio Plank to Pike and would definitely recommend this place to others! 💙

My dog, Caramel, was having a terrible mouth irritation and was not able to drink with blood coming from his mouth. They saw us right away. The staff was very caring, and the veterinarian was patient and kind with him as well. The medicines really helped, and they explained everything very well. The prices are very reasonable also, especially for 24/7 animal emergency care, and they handled that with tact and efficiency during this stressful time. Thank you so much for making my dog better!! While I hope to not have to use your services again, I am so glad to know you are available to provide such great care. Thank you!!!!

Love the vet staff but the office staff can be difficult. I will go in for a yearly exam only to be notified a week or two later that my pet needs another vaccine that they could have administered in my recent visit. Then they want to charge another full visit fee. It took me weeks of playing phone tag with the office manager and head vet to convince them to just administer the vaccine without a full visit fee. The hassle is real. The Vets are amazing though and the care is fantastic.

I’ve been taking my pup here since I got him about 4 months ago. They’re very attentive and pour so much love into him every time. He lights up the second we walk in. I’ve had a bad experience with a previous vet and my dog that passed a few years ago so I’m really grateful for this team and hope their effort of care remains the same.
