How to Save Money at Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't thank Oak Forest Vet Hospital enough for the care they gave us throughout the difficult process of having to put my best friend down. The expert staff handled all of it with delicate care and made sure my boy's final moments were comfortable and painless. They were awesome to him, and to us, his family, and I just cannot thank them enough for everything. We will continue to bring his little brother to the wonderful staff here for all of his vet needs. We are lifelong fans, and I am forever grateful to them.

Love this vet! Everyone is extremely kind and helpful. Setting up appointments is easy, and I am always greeted with kindness. I loved our vet tech and doctor, both were incredible with our pup and answered all of my questions. We were seen in a timely manner for our appointment and we’re able to schedule our next follow up at the check out. Definitely recommend this practice!

This is our pup at the vet. She lays herself down to wait for the staff and her vet favorite vet, Dr.Crocker. When your dog loves to go to the vet, your vet clinic is doing it right. We’ve been clients for over a decade and couldn’t imagine bringing our fur-kiddos anywhere else. Amazing staff, awesome customer service, and the most genuine demeanor from the entire staff. They truly love our pups. Thank you for everything!

My dog and I love this place! Everyone is super nice and efficient here. All the vets here are very knowledgeable and patient with your pet. They would always want to know and understand your pet before recommending any treatment or medication. There is no crazy charges, and the technician teaches you how to save money. I’ve moved to a new place far away in the west Houston, but I would still drive a long way here to get my dog checked every time.

UPDATE: The office manager, Erica, did call and apologize for the situation. It sounds like it was an unfortunate day for Dr. Harmon and the vet tech that was assisting her with a lot going on behind the scenes. Although that does not forgive the experience that we had, I will consider giving Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital another visit with different staff members. I am not sure if I just caught the staff on a bad day, but I am very disappointed in my experience here. I will say, the front desk staff was lovely and very helpful; however, everything else was less than stellar. The second Dr. Harmon stepped in the room (this was the first time I had ever met her) she started criticizing everything from the breed that my dog was listed as on her chart, the fact that I hadn't given her trazadone for a routine vet appointment, the way my dogs harness fit, to the food I have been giving my dog for years. I am all for constructive advice and I want to do what is best for my pet but her delivery was extremely condescending and she made me feel like a horrible pet owner. She also didn't really perform any kind of check up (looking in her ears, checking teeth etc.) she just went straight into giving her vaccines. In addition, the tech that was with her could not hold my dog still for her vaccines because of a bad back and my dog nearly fell off the table. I feel like she should have asked for help if she knew it wasn't something she was able to do physically. Then, after I had already left, they had to call me to come back in because they forgot to collect a blood sample for her heartworm test. We saw the same tech as before except this time she was trying to draw blood while I held my dog still. It was obvious that she couldn't do the blood draw properly and instead of helping to calm my dog she seemed annoyed and irritated. In the end she had to call in someone from the front desk to help her and she was much better. I hate leaving bad reviews but I am so disappointed in how our visit went. Maybe if I had seen a different vet and tech I would have had a different experience because there seem to be a lot of good reviews for this practice which is why I decided to come here in the first place.
