How to Save Money at Arroyo Veterinary Hospital PLLC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am deeply distressed by the tragic loss of my cat and the appalling treatment I received from the clinic. Not only did my healthy one-year-old cat tragically pass away during a routine neutering procedure, but I was also met with a complete lack of transparency and communication regarding the circumstances. Even after the incident, I was subjected to neglectful behavior, as my cat’s body was left unattended for over two hours while no one would address my concerns. Despite my repeated requests to speak with a manager, I was forced to wait for over an hour, all while my cat’s body grew stiffer. The clinic's failure to demonstrate basic empathy, professionalism, or understanding in such a painful moment is both shocking and unacceptable.

I went today for the first time to this place since it was near my workplace and I can't afford to miss too much work. It did take me almost 2 hours from my set appointment to be seen, but i guess it's better than nothing. At first, i did walk in and notice the place was small and the receptionist already looked a bit annoyed (one of them anyway), the other one was trying to be nice. I was trying to stay quiet and give it a chance in my head while i waited, but two people were called in before me even though one showed up 10 minutes after me and the other 30 minutes after me. I showed up 15 min early to sign paper work, and yet somehow was seen last. But aside from this, the vet doctor herself was nice and the one who attended me was professional. I am pleased with the visit with them but I would suggest that the receptionist be more clear with people coming in, especially if it's your first time. If she would have just said to me that there were other people with appointments at 11am and that I might be seen last because I was new and it takes time to enter my info in the system, I would have mentally prepared. But if you don't tell us anything, all we see is people who came after us going in before us. You feel like you are purposely being ignored or something. So, i suggest they be clear upfront and not assume that we know how it all works. Look forward to having a better experience next time, though i hope there won't be because i would rather my pets be healthy and not need a visit to the vet. One more thing, the receptionist looked at me like i was being entitled when i asked if they could give me a courtesy call when my turn is up since they were bombarded, but actually my other vet that i usually go to, they do that. When they are packed and they see pets as a first come first serve basis, they give you a courtesy call to let you know when your pet is going to be next. Other vets do that also. Just a suggestion that if you are all busy and stressed, you could just tell people, "Look it's probably going to be another hour, why don't you get a bite to eat and we'll call you few minutes before your turn. Just don't go too far." So, it's not a request of entitlement as you can see. But it might help release stress from both the client and theh receptionist. Just a thought.

We took our healthy cat to get neutered, a surgery that gets done every single day, instead of getting our precious HEALTHY baby back they gave us his corpse. They claimed they did nothing wrong but there was no indication or history of sickness with our pet. When asked what happened they couldn’t give us a straight answer just kept making excuses to put the blame on everything except for their medical negligence. They had our cat laying dead in a kennel for TWO hours before giving him to us all cold and stiff in a trash bag. They made us wait an hour for an explanation since no one wanted to come out to speak to us. Absolutely traumatic experience for something that should have never happened. They gave us no sympathy or tried to make things right. I would not recommend unless you want your pet to be given to you dead with no explanation.

We just got a puppy! Bear has been ours for two weeks! Of course, we wanted to have him checked out to make sure he was healthy! I called and we got in within a week! The tech was knowledgeable and the vet was great! In and back out in just over an hour! This week, he goes back for a shot! They said a shot is with a tech, you sign in, dog goes back and gets the shot and you're out the door in 15 minutes! Nice that they value your time too! Thank you!

I’ve got all my pets here and have no complaints. They stay busy because they’re good so try to plan in advance when scheduling.
