How to Save Money at Veterinary Specialists of North Texas

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Cook of Veterinary Specialists of North Texas was recommended to me when my beloved Lab was diagnosed with an aggressive, malignant oral tumor. I came to Dr. Cook in a shattered state, convinced my sweet girl was going to die. Dr. Cook explained my options, and after careful consideration of what my dog could tolerate, we opted for surgery and radiation therapy. I have every reason to believe we've beaten this thing and I credit Dr. Cook and the Veterinary Specialists of North Texas for saving Panda's life. The care that I received at this facility was outstanding throughout every moment of this painful journey. I am forever grateful and indebted to these wonderful people for the compassionate and brilliant work that they do. Many, many thanks. Words are not enough. Addendum- The pictures below were taken shortly after her life-saving surgery. This is a happy dog!

Our dog Ace ( Husky) was diagnosed with a Nasal Tumor and our vet referred us to Veterinary Specialists of North Texas. We were explained his diagnosis and possible ways to be treated. He was treated with radiation for 4 weeks. We would drop him off in the mornings and pick him up in the evenings. We know he was treated good because he was ready to go to his treatment every morning. They are all so kind from the people in the front desk, the doctor and her assistants everyone treated him and us with kindness and were always open to explain and help us with anything. We will recommend Veterinary Specialists of North Texas to anyone because we know your pet will be in great hands and that’s because everyone there does their job with love and compassion.

My dog has been receiving radiation care at VSNT for the past 4 weeks. We live out of state and the staff have made it so much easier for us to handle being away from him. We receive daily updates and even pictures. We were able to visit him one weekend and when we dropped him back off he was so happy to see the ICU tech again. Prior to establishing care with VSNT we were told that our dog probably wouldn’t make it long with his cancer and now with radiation, he’s expected to live well into his golden years! I would recommend VSNT to anyone!

I could not say enough positive things about our experience with VSNT. We are so thankful for everyone in that building and are so fortunate to have such a special practice for our dog’s care. Our 5 year old Duck Toller, Toby, was diagnosed with cancer and I wouldn’t have wanted him treated anywhere else. Starting with Dr.Allstadt, the oncologist- she is incredible. She truly advocated for our pup and getting more information when a diagnosis hadn’t been clear from previous diagnostics. She made sure to lay out all the options and reach out to her personal contacts to make sure we obtained all the information to make the best decision for our dog. She referred us to Dr.Franke for surgery (who is also incredible) and then to Dr.Cook for radiation. Dr.Cook collaborated with the other specialists to plan the best treatment for our pups radiation and we couldn’t feel more comfortable with him under her care. Lauren, the radiation tech, was transparent and accommodating to all of our needs during the 20 sessions. She was knowledgeable and provided excellent care! The entire staff was so positive and welcoming- Sydney and all the front office staff! And through it all, they are easy to contact and are quick to respond to messages. It is clear this practice cares so much about animals so don’t hesitate to have them handle your pets care! 20/10!!

I love this place and have been using them for years. I trust Dr. Wilson when she tells me what is going on with my dog. They are always upfront and honest about what is going on and what the different options are moving forward. The staff know who you are, know your animal, and care about them. It shows in everything they do. I drive 2.5 hours to bring my dog in because I know this is where she will get the best care. A picture of the butter bean for any dog tax!
