How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Just Saying

Our Dearest Fur Baby was 12 1/2 and had never been sick, but suddenly became deathly ill. They took great care of our Sweet Boy, even though the best option for him was to meet our other Doggos on the Rainbow Bridge. 💔🐾🌈 Thank you for taking care of him.

Valentine's night, I found VEG quite by accident; I thought I was taking my pup to a different veterinary ER! My three-year-old dog, Meadow Dahling, was very sick and I had no idea what was going on. From the moment I carried her through the door I knew we were where we needed to be. We were quickly brought into the hospital area and assessed by the vet assistant, and then Dr. Summer. After x-rays and honest conversation with Dr. Summer, I decided to take her home with meds and monitor her, along with a promise to either bring her back if she declined or take her to her regular vet in the morning. Five hours later I took her back to VEG, as she seemed to be getting worse. Dr. Johnson saw Meadow immediately and gave me her honest opinion on Meadow's condition, which was critical. Although it wasn't what I wanted to hear, I appreciate the fact that she didn't sugar-coat Meadow's condition. She described to me in detail her suggested course of treatment and proceeded to provide Meadow the critical care she needed. In the morning, Dr. Summer took over Meadow's treatment, and again, I was given the honest truth about her prognosis, which was still critical. I was allowed to stay with Meadow throughout the day, and I could have stayed overnight as well and would have it I didn't have another dog at home to take care of. The veterinary assistants and nurses are so kind, professional, yet provided a sense of humor that helped me deal with the fact that I did not know if my girl was going to make it home. They even made sure I had water, snacks, and I was comfortable while sitting next to my pup. They cared about me as well, which was comforting. The next day Dr. G. took over her care, and again she took the time to explain to me in detail her thoughts on Meadow's course of treatment and prognosis, which by this time was better. She and all of the doctors, nurses, and assistants always took the time to listen to my concerns and answer all my questions. I wish I remembered all their names, but I was so worried about my girl that I didn't think to start a list! One of the overnight vet assistants even described how she had Meadow sitting next to her and how she would talk to her, pet her, and provide comfort. This is how family treats each other, and the team at VEG Camp Bowie is now considered part of our FAMILY. All throughout Meadow's hospital stay I was kept well informed of the suggested treatment, cost of treatment, and given choices. I was kept involved throughout and treated with care and respect. Even Meadow's vet was kept well-informed of her progress. By the way, after a 3.5 day stay, Meadow made it through her illness she is back her loving, crazy, active self. This is due to the incredible treatment she received at Camp Bowie VEG.

Amazing experience with this hospital. Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Johnson were kind and very open to all my questions. Got me and my Moody girl taken care of quickly. The nursing team works together flawlessly and had such an amazing morale it made me miss working ER! Finding out one of the first doctors I ever worked with (Dr. Golleher) works here makes me love it even more! VEG Camp Bowie will always be my go to for any ER needs (which hopefully are far and few between lol!)

The staff at VEG were professional and compassionate in caring for my dog when she was vomiting nonstop. They triaged her immediately and started with the least invasive testing prior to moving onto more invasive (and expensive) treatments. Before any treatment they made sure I agreed to the estimate and that I was comfortable with the costs. The staff made sure I was involved in all of her care and always let me comfort her and hold her and they even let me watch through a window when she was getting surgery. They took excellent care of her while I had to leave for the night and let us stay in a private room while I was there and until she was able to be discharged. 10/10 would recommend VEG to any pet owner! Thank you all for taking such amazing care of my Winnie!
