How to Save Money at VCA Elgin Family Pet Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have really lost faith in this vet. I have brought all my dogs here for years, but not anymore. I had an issue with my dog . She had a mass develop under her chin. It got big fast. I took her in, and they examined her, and her vitals were good. They could not find any infection. Did an x-ray on her jaw to see if they could see anything. Nothing. Sent me home with anti-inflammatory and painkillers. $525!! Long story short, I am not happy at all they could not figure out that it was an abscess! I ended up taking her to ER vet hospital, and they knew immediately. She is home now recovering from minor surgery. They had to drain and clean it out.

My wife and I were very anxious about transferring vet clinics when we moved to Elgin, as I used to work in vet med and that can sometimes make it difficult to trust veterinary staff (and can sometimes make me a bit neurotic and irritating as a customer). I have three dogs, one of which is 16 years old and extremely needy, so the care plan has really been a life saver financially. The front desk staff is great, and I’m in there often enough that they recognize me and my dogs. I’ve never before had dogs that hated going to the vet, but unfortunately all three of my current pups heartily dislike going (not VCA’s fault- the chihuahuas are jerks and my lab is an anxious mess in any new situation). The staff at VCA Elgin has been extremely understanding and caring, even though I’m positive that my dogs do not make their jobs any easier (sorry!). Dr Abbott in particular has been fantastic- she remembers my dogs and is very willing to work with my wife and I to ensure my dogs are getting the best level of care. Finally, the price is extremely reasonable. Anyone on these reviews that is complaining about the price is quite frankly out of touch with the cost of veterinary care. I have found the pricing to be more than fair- even with my two dogs that are not part of the care club. Recently my lab mix spent all weekend at the emergency vet due to a severe allergic reaction that led to hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. The experience at the emergency vet was awful, but once VCA Elgin opened up again on Monday I was so happy to be able to get an appointment right away so that they could run a full blood panel and formulate a plan. I feel completely confident in the care Brodie received at Elgin family pet center, which was a welcome relief after an extremely stressful and emotional weekend. Thank you VCA Elgin! We’re so glad we moved here!

Thank you to the office staff and Dr Metcalf for the love and care I received when I was stressed out. The sheer awesomeness, caring nature and expedited service saved my sweet Bubba's (my cat's) life. I called letting them know that my own vet couldn't even squeeze me in, and the lady said get here as soon. They worked me in, scanned his bladder got me in patient room and told me the grave diagnosis and cost of going to an ER vet. She was almost right on the money, the cost. She quoted thst the Emergency Vet cost would probably be about $4,000 for his care to save him or euthanasia. I'm very thankful that she saved me time, money (no charge for the quick assessment), told me the best place to go... And I was on my way. Dr Metcalf also called ahead to let them know I was coming and that he was critical. I am also in the medical field, so that was appreciated. I got a very good feeling from this doctor, that she cares and that she is straight to the point. I appreciate that in a person. I was able to get an appointment for his new labs for this coming Monday. ***Bonus if you buy your dog or cat food there and their pet doesn't like it they will refund your money. Also their prices are the same as PetSmart and Chewy, no shipping cost!!***

Got in for our appt at 8:27, taken back to the room and Hailey and Dr. Myers were so professional and friendly. Fran in the front office was able to take our payment in the room so that I wouldn’t have to drag my cat my child and all of our luggage back up to the front. Definitely will be back.
