How to Save Money at Summertree Animal & Bird Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Best vet clinic ever! Dr. Nasser is amazing, she is so knowledgeable and straightforward. The vet techs are incredibly kind and everyone is upfront about pricing and expectations. Dr. Nasser spayed my chameleon last year who was egg bound, and was very forthcoming about the risks involved. She did such a great job and my chameleon is doing so well since then. All of our pets will be going to see her as long as she’s practicing!

I had a great experience with Summertree. We have a new baby bunny and our usual vet doesn't see rabbits. They got me back quickly and the doctor was so helpful and informative about rabbit ownership and care and helped us with his health issue. I will definitely keep coming back for our sweet baby Gus :)

Had high hopes but was let down majorly. Took my 17yo macaw for a checkup and are now on day two of a bloody mess from them ripping out a blood feather in his tail. They mishandled him while grabbing him with the towel and it led to them having to sedate him to stop the bleeding (which they charged me for, even tho it was their mistake 😐). I called back today after waking up to a murder scene in his cage, asked them for a cone so he won’t mess with his injury and they tell me they don’t have cones for birds. How does an avian vet not have bird cones? Wishing I dove more into the reviews from other bird parents before heading here. Not happy.

I had my guinea pig neutered at this vet a couple months ago. I was very nervous at looking for the right places since he is four years old and guinea pigs aren’t the best under anesthesia. They talked to me about risks but everything went great. He had a safe recovery and he’s the same happy piggy he always was! They also gave me a really cute photo of him on top of a waffle since that’s his name.

This is my baby Casper. I made an appointment for a broken leg on July 1st. Second pic is for anyone curious on how much it cost roughly. But she was seen and I came back to the clinic to Dr. Wilson telling me she placed a cone on her because she kept trying to bite at the cast. Which I was fine with even though I didn’t know the cost. It was necessary. Well Casper had been doing fine adjusting. Minor swelling but when I called the next day, I was told that was to be expected so I was ok. Well Friday evening, July 5th, I walked in to check on Casper and found her dead at the bottom of her cage. She was in a smaller cage that I blocked off the top so she wouldn’t go far, blanket in the bottom with carefresh bedding on top. Well we removed her cone before burying her and saw she had wounds on her neck. I called Saturday morning to inform them she had passed. After thinking about it later that day, I ran my fingers around the cone and felt there were 2 sharp points on it. I called the vets office again on Monday, July 8th, and requested to speak with Dr. Wilson. Since she is the one who placed it on Casper. I left a message about what I found and requested she call me back so we could discuss that and what else could have happened. Well here we are on July 17 and I have yet to receive a call. So this review is based on that and to inform others to check their E collars before they are placed on your bird. I would hate for it to happen to anyone else. It is never fun to find your loved one dead when it could have been prevented.
