How to Save Money at HEAL Veterinary Hospital + Pet Rehabilitation

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Today was an exciting day! Ralf graduated from rehab and physical therapy at HEAL. Ralf ruptured a disc in the summer and became paralyzed in his hind legs. After his surgery I found HEAL and they quickly got me in for an evaluation with Dr. Gaines and we worked to develop a rehab plan based on Ralf's individual needs. Lisa was assigned to Ralf for his physical therapy and took extra special care of him at each visit. This was important because the first few weeks we went 2xs a week and the progress he made was incredible. After his reevaluation we dropped down to 1x per week and after each visit there was a noticeable difference in how well he was recuperating. To say Ralf loved visiting with Lisa is an understatement because whenever we pulled up into the parking lot he got so excited and would even go looking for her after his acupuncture. Everyone at HEAL is amazing to work with and truly care about their patients and their parents too.

We brought our 13 year old corgi Harry to HEAL shortly after our primary vet suggested that he probably had DM (Degenerative Myelopathy - a degenerative nervous system condition), and that physical therapy (aqua therapy) could be beneficial to him in helping protect his muscle mass and keep his nerves active for longer. Dr. Gaines spent over an hour with us during our initial visit to get all relevant information and help develop a custom plan to help Harry. While he was honest that there is no cure for DM, he agreed with our primary vet that physical therapy plus other treatments could slow the progression and help him live a longer and happier life. Since starting weekly treatment with aqua therapy, acupuncture and cold laser treatment, Harry can now more easily stand up on his own, is walking farther (with some assistance of a special supportive harness) and has more energy - all of which has improved his quality of life and made him happier. We are very grateful to have such specialized experts in Dallas to help with conditions such as these. Besides their technical skills and knowledge, all of the staff are incredibly caring (Harry loves Katie!) and really love working with their pet clients. Harry actually enjoys going and has zero fear of their office. If you need physical therapy for an injured pet or help with a degenerative condition, I can't recommend them highly enough.

I can't recommend HEAL Vet enough. They have taken such good care of our Frenchie Maizey! The entire staff has been amazing. They attentive, knowledgeable, and supporting. A special shout out to Lisa who has been our go to for her Rehab. We feel so lucky to have found this place and these people so close to home.

I’m a veterinarian myself and bring my almost 13 year old dog , Riley, to Dr. Gaines and Lisa (his PT nurse) for once weekly acupuncture, water treadmill, laser, and massage therapy. I cannot express how much his rehab has improved his quality of life. I am so thankful for the HEAL staff for helping keep Riley comfortable in his senior years when medication alone wasn’t helping with arthritis of his hips and neck/back pain. I have referred many senior pet parents to HEAL when medications alone aren’t enough and everyone has been super happy with their experience!

After getting tired of regular vets wanting to treat my dogs allergies with medication rather than figuring out the root cause, I seeked out a vet who practiced integrative medicine to be Cabelas new primary care vet. Finding Dr. Gaines and HEAL has been a god send. Dr. Gaines is by far the most intelligent vet I have ever met and he takes the time to explain everything to ensure you understand the science and facts behind any diagnoses. The entire staff at HEAL treats my dog Cabela as if she is one of their own dogs which has been so comforting during covid when she has had to go into the office without me. For anyone in the DFW area who values their pets and considers them part of their family, HEAL is truly the only option for their care and/or rehabilitation.
