How to Save Money at Lakeside Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 1st visit for my puppy Shadow. Couldn’t have been more pleased! Kaitlin the receptionist was so pleasant. My tech Becky was great & so knowledgeable. Dr S is lovely. Taking time to listen to concerns & how to proceed to resolve. In my visit, I could tell they really care & are devoted. Dnt hesitate to choose Lakeside!

The WHOLE staff here is amazing! We had the unfortunate experience of having to put our dog down from old age/cancer ( a first for my husband and I) and they kindly walked us through gently step by step. Took as much time as we needed and gave us info every step of the way. They had a button so we could say our goodbyes privately and we could press it when we were ready. Tons of blankets so she could be comfortable. AND they even sent a sympathy card a few days later. ALSO a beautiful flower arrangement a few days after that. I felt like they truly cared about our dog. Will always be a customer.

We have been bringing our dogs Louis and Archie here for about 2 years now, and we just love the team here! Lakeside is slightly higher than i have paid in the past, but i really feel like the Vet techs and the Vets here listen, and hear your concerns. They have always helped so much when they are sick, and have found solutions that worked! Thank you Lakeside for always loving our boys!

We have brought our dog there several times. The staff is always friendly, the veterinarians are great and everything is so clean and welcoming. I would highly recommend them.

Disappointed to say the least. I wouldn't mind the 20% higher rates if the care/service matched. Dr. Nath does not seem like a dog person at all. My Shepherd pit-bull mix was treated like a monster; Dr. Nath wouldn't even enter the exam room because he growled once (we were both uncomfortable with the way they were acting) Neither the staff or the vet made any attempt to get to know him (didn't offer a treat, didn't speak with a softer tone), instead they acted scared even after the muzzle went on and he was cooperative. DO NOT TRUST THEM with your large dog. They sent me home with trazadone and wanted me to bring him back sedated in order to finish the exam. I spent $145 for 25 minutes in the clinic (most of which did not include any sort of exam or recommendations for care, and they didn't bother to even read his prior records that they demanded I send from Oregon.) some medicated shampoo and antibiotics (Totaling $60) and the trazadone (another $28) and then they wanted me to pay another $35 for a "re-exam" if I brought him back sedated. My dog is very sweet and interacts just fine at other veterinary clinics, and in the airport. Again, I do not recommend this clinic to large breed owners. Perhaps they have something against his breed, I don't know, and I don't care; I'm appalled at their behavior. WORST VET EXPERIENCE EVER.
