How to Save Money at Thomas Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Received very kindly. Receptionist is efficient and helpful. All changed when we entered the exam room, not welcoming for our fur baby or us. The assistant was very businesslike but not very friendly for our first encounter- definitely did not get the “your pet is important”. Being new to the state we have questions and concerns so I was asking questions- some answered, some just ignored. When the vet came in, she was in and out so fast that my head spun. She was already on her way out and I asked a basic question about my cat’s teeth. A quick, dismissive answer and she was gone. All is surprising, also because my cat has a very large growth or something on the inside of her neck which, if a thorough examination was done, she would have caught and asked about. The assistant then gave us final instructions and was sending us on our way. I asked if they included nail clipping and was given a full discourse on why they charged— she basically, and literally told me that time is money. We will look into other vets that have been recommended. Seemingly nice people, but truly a business focused on the money— at least that’s our impression

I started going to Thomas Clinic because my dog didn't seem to warm up to the last vet. He has anxiety pretty bad and he just wasn't doing well there. At Thomas, he relaxes a lot more, he seems more accepting of the staff. They are wonderful, have a lot of patience with him and give him plenty of treats. I also appreciate that they do not judge, they work with me and are encouraging. I highly recommend this clinic. Top notch staff and very friendly, lots of smiles.

We have followed Dr. Thomas from his previous clinic. He helped us years ago when our kitten broke both hips and honestly saved his life. Dr. DeBose also saved my dog's life by telling us the blood work would help us determine if it was time to euthanize. Granted my dog is 12 or so years old, but we really wanted to make an informed decision. She took the time to discuss cost and the pros and cons of our options. Same dog a few weeks later, I took to the shelter for his annual rabies shot. The vet there said point blank he had an ear infection and said he did not have medication on him. He then advised me to take him that day to my regular vet, which we use Dr. Thomas. The.clinic got me in on the same day to be seen. First thing we got into a room right away, which is great. The staff was super friendly. I told the tech what the shelter vet had told me and he said let me get some ear swabs. Did not mention the cost or really ask me if I wanted to pay for that in addition to the vet visit and medication costs. Next, Dr. Thomas comes in, after a discussion about the thermostat that I could hear clearly. He says yes it is an ear infection and says the ear swabs will tell him what antibiotics to administer. Again, sounds like part of the office visit costs. Dr. Thomas returns and lets me know that it is a bacterial and yeast infection. The also informs me that his ears are inflamed and he needs an injection for that. The antibiotics will be administered by packing the ear canals with a gel based medicine that dissolves over two weeks. I ask about the cost and this time I am informed that the tech will let me know once he puts it into the computer. Dr. DeBose did that with me sitting there, why could Dr. Thomas not? What if I could not afford the medication now that I have incurred unknown fees? Turns out the ear swabs were almost as much as the office visit as were the shot and medication. No options were given. The impression that I perceived was take it or leave it. I was not impressed with this particular visit. As of today my dog is doing great for an old man. For that I am thankful.

A 24 hour ER clinic made no attempt at honoring our wishes with our dog. They were pushy and disrespectful. We are so glad we left skid marks against medical advice so we could go to Thomas animal clinic the following morning. Everyone on staff was exceptional! We were treated with respect and our old dog with dignity throughout the difficult process of deciding what was the best course of action. We will never take any of our animals anywhere else. Thank you!

Dr. Thomas is such a wonderful person. My dog once ate a turtle, got obstructed, and saved my dog from becoming more sick. He prioritizes his patients and will give whatever they need. Very caring doctor and staff!
