How to Save Money at Veterinary Surgical Solutions
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

On March 29th our miniature schnauzer, Bandit (8yrs) was hit by a car and suffered fractures to his left radius and ulna bones and his left tibia. Our local ER vet place was able to stabilize his legs but suggested surgery due to the likelihood of his bones not healing properly and possibly amputating legs. It was a shock to hear but we were glad our dog didn’t not die from such accident. Over the next following days my wife and I spent some time calling different vet surgery places and we were devastated by the cost of surgery(we were quoted by 3 different places over $6,500). I kept looking and stumbled upon VSS- I filled out the paperwork and within a day I got a call from a tech, she went over the treatment and cost.. they gave us a range, min $3,700 max $4,300. Thank god we found them!! The staff were extremely nice! Even though we would have to drive 2.5 hours it was worth it! Bandit got the surgery and although it was a tough 6-8 weeks of recovery and check ups every week after surgery the results are amazing! The surgery and check ups were definitely a little different- day of surgery we dropped off Bandit 7:30am at the surgery place and got called later in the day to pick up Bandit, the price we paid it included all medications for Bandit. Dr. Lewis called us and gave us information about the surgery along with answering few questions and after that it was check ups every week for 4 weeks(some check ups we did pay for some stuff but nothing crazy!!!). During Bandits check ups the techs would take Bandit inside their tech/surgery area to be assessed by Dr. Lewis and then they would bring Bandit out with the vets instructions/recommendations. We would’ve loved to been able to see and shake Dr. Lewis hand and thank him in person but he was busy, which we understand, he is busy performing surgeries and calling pet parents with updates and many other things. Thank you Dr. Lewis for all your hard work and Thank you to all the staff! Marian, Sharon, LeeAnn, and Jen! And everyone behind the scenes working in this awesome place!

VSS has been amazing. They make a stressful situation very comforting and are great communicators. You can also tell they genuinely care about the dogs (And people). This isn't just a transaction to them, they build relationships with both the animals and pet parents. Thanks to this business for providing an affordable AND top tier service. If you don't believe me, check out Rocky's face on the way home from Physical Therapy (Which is included in your surgery and makes a world of difference)

I’m glad we went here. It was a little tough to get scheduled for surgery initially so I almost went a different direction, but I’m glad I didn’t. Prices for TPLO surgery included PT and those regular touch points made me much more secure in my dog’s progress and recovery. Once we were in the system and patients, they were very accommodating/ communicative with scheduling and adjustments as needed. Good experience all around, I’d recommend them to a friend.

My dog, Eliza, has had two surgeries at Veterinary Surgical Solutions - one in 2020 when she fractured her hip, and one recently when she needed to have her left eye removed because she was blind from birth and the eye was hurting her. Dr. Lewis is a great surgeon and was quick to advise me of Eliza's condition after her surgery. Eliza has recovered quickly, and the cost was quite affordable compared to other vets. I recommend Veterinary Surgical Solutions for any surgery that your pet may need.

My fur baby "Halle" (Halle B is her nickname) graduated today from physical therapy! She had TPLO (aka ACL surgery) in November at Veterinary Surgical Solutions in Austin. I "HIGHLY" recommend Dr. Lewis and his team, they are the best and John Brandt, Halle's physical therapist was absolutely amazing! I called multiple places and this was the team that was the best fit and then having PT for my baby was the icing on the cake, who does that? No one else I spoke with even offered it. The office is easily accessible with ample parking, very clean waiting area, they also have a "doggie relief area" just outside with bags. The staff is very friendly and thorough in their explanations of what's to be expected and next steps. They even emailed the notes to me from each visit afterward. Dogs are like us in needing physical therapy to get back as much full use of their limbs in my opinion. VSS is not only more affordable but offer free PT as part of their surgical services or at least the one we had done. They only do surgeries so you're not paying for a lot of the extra overhead that other places charge. Their pricing is online so you can easily know what to expect. I saw that they even have payment companies they accept so check that out if you don't have the cash on hand. I'm so happy and she will be happier soon enough. This is my "go-to" place in the future and it should be yours too!
