How to Save Money at Travis Country Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This staff is so kind and amazing. I’ve been taking both of my dogs here for years- it’s honestly been great with them…. Even during the harder times.. We lost a dog this March, and I can’t explain how caring everyone there has been and still is every time I’ve gone there with my other doggy since. Love this place.

Having recently moved to Austin, we needed a new vet clinic for our aging pup. Upon entering the modest blue building, we were pleasantly pleased to be greeted by smiling faces and a polished, clean environment. Our senior dog was treated with kid gloves by the techs. We saw Dr. Hart who was very kind and knowledgeable, taking a conservative approach to our fur baby’s care. We appreciated the reasonable prices and are excited to have found our forever vet clinic in Austin!

Been taking my pets here for many years now. Totally happy with the level of care all my cats and dogs have received. Kind and compassionate doctors and staff. Also I recently got a new kitten from Austin Animal center and 10 month old dog from New Hope Rescue. Was pleasantly surprised that the new pet exam was complimentary. Probably because they were rescue animals.

September 2022: This year my pup needed dental work. Dr Sam was great! He called and checked in with me just before and after the surgery. They even went the extra mile and clipped his nails AND checked his ears for me! They take such great care of my dog that I feel like I’m working with a trusted family member. Really the absolute BEST Vets office in ATX. The whole staff are amazing! 2021 review: We absolutely LOVE Doctor Buys and all the folks at Travis Country Vet! I’m so glad they were recommended to me when I adopted my sweet dog last year. I love the one on one attention and care they give my fur baby.

I’ve been taking my dog to this vet for over a decade, but after today I never will again. I’m not sure if he’s just filling in as Baker is not listed on the website, but I would never recommend a friend to take their pet to this man. He came into the room (only shaking my boyfriend’s hand and only addressing him even though I was the only one speaking and this has been my dog for 13 years) and says that he already looked at my dog while he was away for a couple of minutes getting his heart worm test done. When my dog is brought back in the room, baker isn’t listening to what I’m trying to say the issue has been at all. My dog is in there for arthritis and pain in his legs, and Baker is pushing and pulling him around, not gently at all. Every vet and vet tech he has ever seen in this office has been gentle, kind, compassionate, and listens to me and talks to me until we’re comfortable. This man was none of those things. It clearly seems like these are only animals to him and just a job. If I’m going to spend $450 on testing at a visit, I’ll be taking that money somewhere that actually listens and wants to help, and not spending it here any longer.
