How to Save Money at Highland's Pet Medical Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've tried a couple vets in the area since moving here and I'm thrilled with Highland's. Everyone here is so nice and welcoming. You can tell they care. It's very easy to book with them. I took my kitty Leonard for a regular checkup and he had a bump on his side. The vet was so reassuring and calm. She gave me several options and was very upfront with the costs and not pushy at all. After an in house biopsy we settled on removal a couple months later and were able to add dental cleaning at the same time to save some money and allow for Leonard only needing to be put under once. He got his stitches out today and I was again impressed with the level of care. Leonard says thank you!

My cats and I have been going to Highland's Pet Medical Clinic for a long time. Even though I am with my 4th cat now the environment and feelings of compassion and understanding never go away. Highland's Pet Medical Clinic is knowledgeable, understanding, they listen to your concerns, and care for the over all well being of your furry family member. I have recommended this vet clinic in the past and I will definitely do it again if a friend or family member asks. Thank you for everything throughout the years Highland's Pet Medical Clinic!

The staff that answers the phones here are so dry and rude. They put no effort into assisting with what would seem like an easy answer. I’m pretty sure the only words you have to know to work here are “I don’t know what to tell you” I am trying to get a record updated and they can’t seem to find any information like the dog was never there. I mean unless this paperwork is made up the last time he was there was only a couple few months ago. So I’m guessing they must get rid of patients records every 30 days. I’m glad I experienced their terrible customer service before I took my dog back there.

Highland Pet Medical is truly the only place I will bring my animals. They’re attention to detail, empathy for owners, and care for the animals is unmatched. I found them when my dog had hurt herself at the dog park and I was panicking calling tons of vets in the area and they were the only place that gave me any sense of relief and support. They informed me I could bring her in immediately. When I brought her in, they were extremely helpful and made me feel so taken care of, as well as my dog. Now my cat goes there as well and I feel so grateful to have such a reliable and kind vet for my babies.

Wanted to post a quick note on the awesome care I recently received for my elderly dog Rocco at Highlands Pet Clinic. Both the tech and the vet (Dr. Bird) were very thorough and empathetic in the care they provided Rocco (who’s a ripe 15 years old…). Dr. Bird was very good at explaining what was going on with Rocco (skin condition) and prescribed some meds for him and some homework for me. It was my first visit to the clinic based on a recommendation of an existing customer and I’m glad I went and will certainly return so Rocco can live another 15 years!
