How to Save Money at Austin Veterinary Emergency and Specialty

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

There’s not even close to enough words to say how amazing this Pet ER is. I brought my baby girl in with not even a phone call before arriving and they immediately jumped into accessing her, making sure we were good, and getting right down to work. They took such great care of my girl who is very high-anxiety by default, so much so that she was immediately comfortable in their hands. The greatest part was how extremely thorough they were and very straight forward as to not keep me in the dark toward pricing, progress and expectations. They laid everything right out in front of me in order to make the best choices for my girl. I’m happy to report that we were able to come home with a remedy, follow-up recommendations, and pure relief. I cannot assure you more that this is the right place to go for your pet emergencies. Prices are affordable (in the mindset of knowing how steep vet bills can be and comparing it to most other 24-hour places) that I didn’t even need to get Care Credit but decided to go through with the application because I can actually pay it off and further benefit my credit. Side note: Care Credit itself is a tricky thing because if you pay off within 6-months, it’s no interest but 32% if more than that, just fyi! In closing, I want to thank every single person who worked with us to bring Margot home tonight where I was almost convinced that this was something that would have ended me. The staff was incredible sincere and it just really helped to comfort me of all. Thank you, thank you, thank you AVES!!!!

Really appreciated all the people in the back, from first asking if my boy was a working dog and if they could take him back for a exam, to keeping me updated and doing the MRI of his stifles as well as back, even though stifles weren’t something they regularly did. They had truepanion direct and were able to get my preapproval quickly and save me from having to make a second trip over (roughly 2hrs one way). They have also touched base twice to check up on my boy. I will definitely use them again, when the need arises!

Sadly, I had to take my dog here to get an MRI, to find out he had brain cancer. Fortunately, the staff here is so incredibly kind and made the process of decision making and end of life care more easy than I expected. They were incredibly responsive to my calls and emails, even after hours when my buddy was ill and I wasn’t quite sure what to do. They made a terrible time in my life easier with their care, attention, and understanding. They even sent a condolences card after my buddy passed away.

Had to take my sick mini schnauzer to AVES on Sunday morning at 3am. Saw me right away and kept me apprised throughout the visit. Discussed various levels of treatment and the one I selected alleviated the symptoms within a couple of days. AVES has a terrific staff and I highly recommend AVES!

Almost died the night before , but was told to bring her here in case she needed an operation. They did testing , scans, given oxygen, after two days and nights of excellent care ….able to bring her home and today she is one happy little girl and we are so thankful for the care and concern. Thank you one and all.
