How to Save Money at Bluff City Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Thanks to Dr Mitchener, Sheldon, and the rest of the wonderful people at Bluff City, our sweet boy is in remission from cancer! They loved him like their own, and provided a chemo treatment that helped him so much! We could not be more grateful for the health and happiness of our sweet Mosby. It was more than worth the frequent drives from Little Rock for the best care for our boy. He was never nervous going in, and loved the staff so much! There are not enough words to express my gratitude. Thank you Bluff City Vet!

We are very pleased with ours and Luke's first visit. Printed plan of action (which is amazing) regarding his possible treatment. The Dr is so nice and very informative/straightforward. (Which, again, is amazing)

I can't say enough good things about them! Dr. Fisher took his time to answer all my questions and concerns. My bulldog had to have surgery and they kept me updated with text messages and photos the entire time he was there. The entire staff is absolutely amazing. They definitely go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and handle your fur babies with the utmost care. Very compassionate & trustworthy! So thank you to the entire staff at Bluff City Veterinary Specialists! I truly cannot thank you enough ♥️

Our dog seemed to handle the chemo well but when she went for her last appt Dr Michener tells me that a simple urine analysis shows her kidneys to be permanently damaged, possibly by the chemo drug. I then take our dog home and the next day she is having trouble breathing. I rush her to the nearest vet clinic where they take a simple chest X-ray after listening to her lungs with a stethoscope. Two simple procedures that Dr Michener never thought of. They showed that my baby’s lungs were filled with cancer. The first day I spoke with Michener about our dog’s breast cancer, she told me that breast cancer migrates to the lungs when it spreads. And yet she still didn’t do a simple X-ray. Nor did she do periodic urine analysis to chk for kidney function. We put our faithful companion to sleep. And the truth was her cancer was always going to kill her eventually. But it’s also true that Bluff City did a crap job in caring for her. Maybe they help some dogs, I don’t know. If you use them then follow their treatment carefully. Please don’t assume like I did that they’re doing everything that they should.

I’d like to take a second to brag on Dr. Kathy Mitchener. The past few weeks have been undoubtedly stressful, as we found five lumps on Remy and one recently on Shadow. We had been watching a few of Remy’s spots for a while, but made the decision last week that we wanted to get a second opinion, especially after now finding a lump on Shadow. Dr. Kathy took time with us this morning to go over options, preventative treatments for cancer, discussed a combination of holistic and modern approaches to facing tumors, and just really made us feel seen, especially as I walked into their office this morning in tears because I was so worried. 6 biopsies later, we are so thankful that the “lumps” came back as benign lipomas. We are now working with Dr. Mitchener on other preventatives, early screening, and a home-cooked diet. If your pet has cancer or suspect something might not be 100% right, please run, don’t walk, to see Dr. Kathy!
