How to Save Money at Animal Emergency & Specialty Center of Knoxville

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I seldom write reviews but it’s so very necessary here. The staff at Animal Emergency & Specialty Center of Knoxville is AMAZING! Every person I dealt with was patient, kind and sympathetic. They went out of their way to answer any questions I had, and I had plenty! Although everyone I dealt with was wonderful, I’d like to specifically thank Alexis and Megan. It seemed as if every time I called, whether it be 8am, 5pm or 2am, one of them answered and was always willing to help me in any way they could! They went above and beyond in what they did and I can never convey how much it was appreciated. One other person that I would be remiss without calling out is Dr. Whittemore! This woman (and her team) are nothing short of a Superstars in my book! She explained every detail of what was going on, the possible outcomes, the medications and the steps they took to get my four-legged family member back home and healthy. This facility may not be able to save every life but from my perspective, it’ll never be because they didn’t give everything they have to the endeavor! They truly care about every living thing that walks through their doorway. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

We recently lost out 17 year old Yorkie. I called them about bringing him in and they were very kind and compassionate. When I arrived with him I was too emotional and called to see if they could come outside and get him. They came outside and the young lady who took him was so sweet. Today I received a card from them with employees signatures and my doggies footprint. That made me cry, but made my day. I don't care if this is just some routine thing they do. I APPRECIATED it. Thank you Animal Emergency and Specialty Center of Knoxville for being compassionate at such a difficult time. 💔

We rushed our 12-14 year old dog down to the emergency room the other day. she was freezing cold, unresponsive and we knew that she was dying. One of the vets ran outside and picked her up, and ran inside with her. if there was anyway of saving her i know it would’ve been done. These people were fast, patience, sympathetic and gave us every bit of time we needed to say goodbye to our Ladygirl. the general setting of the office was warm and comforting as well. i would recommend taking your fur babies here if god forbid something ever happened to them.

Nothing but a positive experience. Even though by German Shepherd Abel didn't make it, and our time was cut short, the attention to detail, quick diagnosis and treatment options they gave him were top notch. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the local emergency clinic where we live. I would trust these people with my future pets. Thank you for your compassion and professionalism that you awarded him and me. All the best 👍- Nick

Original impression of this place was great, but was followed up with them causing a GI bleed in my dog, them keeping him in the ICU there without doing the tests they said they were going to do/feeding him his allergens, and then the treatments prescribed post-ICU stay worsened the GI bleed, hurt his kidney function, and they wanted to keep him overnight in ICU for 2 additional days when we returned yet said no specialist would be looking at him until Monday. I essentially paid $5,000+ for them to almost kill my dog and they wanted an additional $4,000+ to repeat the same testing/treatments they did 3 days prior that almost killed him in the first place. I strongly urge against leaving your pet with them. Should not be allowed to be listed as an emergency and specialty office for animals.
