How to Save Money at Cordova Station Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place is full of kind, caring, and knowledgeable people. We have taken our Sheltie here for years. Recently, we had to make the hard decision to put our eighteen year old Siamese kitty to sleep. They were so kind, informative, and gave our sweet old man the dignity and care he deserved

The most money hungry clinic you would ever go to. Took my dogs here for years and always had an extremely high bill with each visit. The last one being over $700! My dog has allergies and they continued to give me bad suggestions of giving Benadryl that clearly did not work due to the continue itching and constant ear infection that cost an arm and a leg to resolve. When I pushed for another option they recommended a shot or a prescription called apoquel. During the visit I explained that I couldn’t continue paying to come in for the injections every time and wanted a prescription. The nurse even recommended to get the prescription from them and then take to Costco to fill since it was cheaper. He said to go ahead and do the injection that visit and then I could come back once that injection runs out to pick up the prescription to get filled elsewhere without paying for a consultation. I made sure to confirm that I wouldn’t have to pay for another visit. Once the injection ran out and my dog was showing his allergy issues again I called and requested the prescription. Once I went to pick up they gave the bottle of pills and was ready to charge me. Once I stated that I just needed the prescription and not the pills they had me wait again and then a lady (Tara) from the back (that I have never met before with a power trip) told me pretty aggressively that she will only give me one month supply (which was a lie because she only gave me a two week supply per the prescription) because I have to bring him back in for bloodwork as a “baseline”. I asked how much more would that cost and she said $250! Of course if I were to purchase the medicine from them instead that was not brought up at all. I left and tried to get the prescription I had filled through Chewy. Chewy suggested the quickest way to get it filled was to put the vet’s info instead of mailing in the prescription which I did. The next morning I get an email that the vet declined the request. When I called to asked the same rude woman (I’m being told is Tara, a tech, who has never treated any of my pets before) said she declined it because she already gave me a written script. I explained to her the quickest process with Chewy and she said that fine, to send again and she will approve. But emphasized that I need to come in to get blood work. Which I questioned why it was not done at my previous visit to save me at least the consultation fee. They just kept rambling on with the importance (to their pockets!) of the costly bloodwork. I explained that I understand there is protocol but that should have told me before in my previous visit and when I requested to talk to the vet from my previous visit he was not available and I was transferred to someone else that kept rambling on the importance of bloodwork. You can clearly see from the other one star reviews that I am not the only one with similar issues with this clinic. Learn from my mistakes and save your money and go somewhere else.

Two of Cordova stations happy customers! Dominick grooms both pets pictured here (before & after pics of cat). It’s hard to put into words how much I appreciate his personality and kindness he has towards my pets so instead I’ll share a story. The fist time Nibbler (cat) was groomed by Dominick my husband picked her up, sent me a pic and I called their vet office immediately. I had to speak to Dominick on the phone because I wanted to make sure he understood just how grateful I was. Grooming Nibbler has been…I don’t want to say traumatizing but it’s been incredibly difficult for both myself and for her. It’s not news to anyone that cats don’t exactly appreciate the gesture or the act. I shared that with Dominick and do you know what he said? He said “yes, she got upset with me a few times too but each time she told me she didn’t like something I stopped grooming and we just had a little conversation to let her cool down. Her and I had a lot of conversations” I want everyone to know that I fully anticipated Nibbler having to be sedated for this grooming session because she puts the wild in the term “wild cat” when I’ve attempted bathing her. So instead of jumping to the easiest path of sedating for her bath and haircut he took time out to have a time out with her! Nibbler even came home happy!

These people were so awesome. They were super nice, down to earth and made me feel so welcomed. I live off of disability and didnt really have alot of money to work with, and they talked to me just like they would a relative. The actual doctor personally called me to talk about my pet and he didnt rush through the conversation at all. I mean he really talked to me and was one of the kindest coolest vets Ive ever met. He told me if I had any questions or worries he would be there personally to talk to me and not just a tech. Also a day or two later someone else from the staff called and checked on us. Very awesome place! I highly recommend them. They were charging less than the 8 other places I had called.

CSAH staff are always kind to pets and clients alike. They very obviously prioritize the well-being of their animal patients above all else. They've repeatedly gone far out of their way to offer their time and expertise solely for the sake of my pets.
