How to Save Money at VCA Regional Institute for Veterinary Emergencies and Referrals
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Thursday evening about 830, I arrived at VCA River with my sweet kitty who was having a very hard time breathing. Within moments he was taken back, and only moments later, they brought me critical care paperwork informing me of the potential costs for my consent to treat. They also asked my preference for CPR. I initially asked to speak with the vet before making a decision, but the staff member came back to let me know they were all hands on deck with my kitty and couldn't spare any time if I wanted him to live. Gutted, I gave my consent. I didn't have to wait much longer before Dr. DeMallo (spelling?) came to speak with me about his condition. She was very thorough in explaining his condition and the costs associated with it. Ultimately, because of the costs associated, daily medicine regimen, and the short life expectancy before inevitably going into heart failure again, we decided it was best to go ahead and let him go. They were so patient and caring throughout the evening. They kept him as comfortable as possible until my MIL could get there with my kids, and we loved on him until my husband was able to make it to us. My kids were devastated, but even through their tears and grief, they noticed that Dr. DeMallo gave our sweet friend loving scratches and told him goodbye as she gave him the medicine to put him to rest. We know ER care can be quite costly as we've taken one kitty to a different ER before, but VCA River made the experience much more bearable. Previously, I had to pay a $500 deposit before they would even look at my cat. Here, they took him right back to access before giving me an estimate and prognosis. Thank you, VCA River for the care you showed my Flynn and my family on such a difficult night.

Our dog had a major surgery over the weekend at our vet, and he insisted she go somewhere to stay overnight to be monitored. We were so pleased with all of the staff at this facility. They even sent a picture of her letting us know she's okay around 1:30am. So thankful for them! Would highly recommend anyone taking their fur babies here!

I have one pretty complex cat that was on the verge of death when we first brought him in. The staff not only worked to keep him alive during the emergency but have continued to care for him since then. They’ve been realistic with their outlook while still providing hope and compassion. Dr. Bogue suggested an alternative that’s keeping him at a healthier spot and has continued to help us along our journey. Honestly she’s been the only vet willing to advise on his complex case over the many months we’ve been dealing with it. The receptionists and techs are all super sweet and give Mr. Amos lots of love. I’m forever grateful for their hard work and compassion. Amos is definitely a little fighter but he couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you VCA River ❤️

The staff was the most compassionate and humane people I could have been with during the last time with my dog. I tried for hours to reach my vet in Dayton, Rhea Pet Medical Center, after being told I could call, and my call would be returned. They knew she was in so much pain, as she had spent the whole day before at that office. It's been almost a week and they have still not reached out to check on my dog. I thank God that I was able to go to VCA. They took such good care of me and my dog in her last minutes. Her ashes were returned to me in less than a week. I would highly recommend VCA. Thank you VCA.

My sweet boy had been regurgitating after every meal today, so I decided to bring him into this emergency clinic to put my mind at ease. As expected, there was quite a wait but the CSR was attentive and the technician also took their time to check in with us and get a detailed history. Sirius’s doctor ended up being Dr. Jones, and he was absolutely wonderful. Knowledgeable, kind, and kept the conversation honest but light-hearted. He proceeded with the treatments that were necessary and took the time to explain his assessment of our lil man’s issue. Overall, we had a very pleasant experience here. I also wanted to take this opportunity to say that the sedation for his x-rays hit him like a TRUCK. Poor baby barely made his way to bed lol. P.S. I’m sorry that I can’t thank everyone by name, but you were all so understanding and patient, so thank you!
