How to Save Money at Port Royal Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I have read some of the reviews regarding Port Royal Animal Hospital and wanted to give an honest review. Our cat has had urinary issues his entire life, having had surgery when he was very young, and again recently. Both times Port Royal Animal Hospital has preformed the surgery with care and compassion for our beloved Percy. Port Royal Animal Hospital has always been upfront and reasonable with their pricing. Due to an emergency we went to a local animal hospital (who was amazing) but charged 3x more for care. After determining that surgery could wait a couple of days, we brought our cat home. Port Royal Animal Hospital called to check on Percy the next day, received the records, and managed to fit Percy into their already fully booked surgery schedule to save his life, for half the cost. Both vets at Port Royal genuinely cared about animals, and our sweet 10 year old Percy cat. Prior to going to the emergency clinic, Port Royal even saw Percy to rule out a urinary infection to try and save us from unnecessary emergency surgery in the late afternoon. I trust them and appreciate the doctors and staff that definitely care about animals and are kind during difficult times. I, like others have tried to get shots and regular checkups at other lower cost vets, but unfortunately some of those offices are unable to take x-rays and needed ultrasounds. I would highly recommend Port Royal Animal Hospital to anyone looking for caring compassionate care, and know without a doubt that they can handle any situation or get you to the right place.

Fantastic staff & vets! Personable & empathetic. I bring my pet rats here as they are considered exotic pets. Dr. Marikay is experienced & knowledgeable. I trust her entirely with their care!

Update: February 2, 2023: I left a review before, but I’d like to update it. Last month, we said goodbye for now to our beloved cat, Wren. I had her for five years as my treasured companion. When I first adopted her, she had horrible dental issues and was scared of everything. I’d sit beside her hiding spot under my bed each day letting her come to me on her own terms, and she did. In fact, she never parted from my side since the day she discovered I’d never hurt and always love her. We had each other in the best and worst of times. I’ll miss her for the rest of my days and will meet her on the bridge when the time comes 🌈🐾 In reflection, through early detection and continued care at PRVH, as well as help from her oncologist in Charleston, we had another wonderful year of quality life together after her initial cancer diagnosis. During her last month, Dr. Marikay, along with all of the other staff alike, were incredibly kind and always supported us, from emergency care to any question I had on how best to take care of Wren. She truly had superheroes on her side, even when we said goodbye. While that day was heartbreaking for me, the compassion and care we received was more than I could have hoped for. We felt at home in their comfort room, and the entire process was respectful and peaceful. Thank you for helping ensure our special girl did not suffer and for the hand-signed card from your staff after ❤️ I still bring her senior canine sister, Mya, here for all of her needs and cannot recommend this practice enough, which has become my top favorite out of any I’ve ever been to. If you have a short wait, due to an emergency coming in, please do be kind. You’d want your animal to get immediate care if the situation was reversed 😊 Importantly, we need to be mindful of the mental health of our veterinary professionals, too, as they really do care for our babies as much as we do. One other tip for animal parents - I highly recommend pet insurance. I got it to have extra cushion for emergencies or unexpected disease, etc. Though, I do believe this practice has incredibly reasonable costs for the stellar service they give. Thank you, PRVH!

We have been bringing our pets to PRVC for the last 3 years while we were stationed at PI. I appreciated how close they were to our apartment and that we could talk all of our pets (3 cats and 3 rats) to the same vet clinic. Overall I have had a positive experience with the vet clinic. At least until our last appointment. I arrived about 5min before my appointment with our 3 cats for their wellness exam. We had a 9:00am, 9:20am, 9:40am. After a short wait in the lobby they took us back to the exam room, where I waited. And waited and waited. It was after 10:15am before a vet tech came into the room to begin the exam. At this point I was a bit frustrated. I would have appreciated if someone had checked in on us and told me that the clinic was a little behind or that an emergency had come in. I really don't care what it was, I just wished someone had 1. Communicated that our appointments had been pushed back and 2. Apologized for making us wait over an hour to be seen. Anyways, the vet tech went over what shots the cats needed and gave me an amount for the exam and asked if that was ok, I asked if that was the total and the tech said yes. We proceed with the exam. The tech asked if I wanted the cats to get their shots in the exam room or in the back. I said in the exam room please because one of my cats gets really stressed when he's at the vet and even more so when he's taken away from me. The tech left and came back and told me they were going to get their shots in the back instead of in the exam room. I don't understand why I was given the option if the decision was going to be made for me. The tech also didn't explain the need for the change. Anyways, two of my cats did fine but when they brought my stress muffin cat back he was drooling and show sighs of stress. Now I know the vet staff took good care of him and didn't do anything that wasn't necessary, I just didn't appreciate having to put him through that and know it would have been less stressful if he had been able to stay where he could see/smell me. After that we got everyone packed up and ready to go home. When I got to the front counter to pay my bill I was told a much higher amount then what I was told in the exam room. That's when I realized that the amount the tech quoted me was for one cat not all three. Overall all my last visit wasn't the best and I'm disappointed to end on a sour note. We have since moved out of the area so we will not be returning. My top three comments to PRVC 1. If you're running behind let your patients know. I shouldn't have to wait an hour to be seen with no explanation. 2. Make sure your Tech's clearly state if the exam amount said before proceeding is the total for all or just one pet if you are seeing a multi pet appointment. 3. Don't give the option to do the shots in the exam room and immediately take it away.
