How to Save Money at New River Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

When we were on our way from Pennsylvania to Florida our dog started panting and wouldn't stop. She just kept getting progressively raspier. We shopped to get her some calming chews to see if they would help calm her. I let the dogs out to pee while my wife went in for the chews. Before my wife got out of the store Bailey had worsened. Her raspy panting turned to wheezing. I bent down to triple check her harness, and saw her tongue was dark purple, almost blueish. She was struggling to breathe. I googled the closest emergency vet and it happened that New River was 2 minutes away. I drove as fast as was safe, grabbed her in my arms and rushed in the door. Several staff members immediately rushed over, took her from my arms and rushed her to the back. They saved her life. Was it expensive? Yes. Very. But how many vets have the equipment and expertise to sedate and intubate a Pomeranian fast enough to save her life? I have no clue. I am just glad I was at a vet that had the skill and expertise. Did it cross my mind that they may have been taking advantage of? I am ashamed to say it did cross my mind. The hospital staff were able to explain every part of the care plan they provided. Not only did they save her life, they made sure she had no other complications and was completely ok to travel with us again. They provided medication and a plan the keep Bailey calm while we traveled. After the sticker shock, it sunk in that I absolutely don't want to have a repeat of complications in the middle of nowhere on the highway. I am extremely happy that the staff was so thorough. I am really glad the staff are so knowledgeable and experienced. Bailey is back to her normal self and she is absolutely loving the extra attention we are giving her. I really hope nothing like this ever happens to our pets again. Of anyplace on the East Coast to have an emergency like this, I am glad we were close to New River. I really can't thank them enough.

Every staff member here is an Angel. I had to say goodbye to my girl under very unexpected circumstances. To wake up to a normal day and have to say goodbye to your cherished, loving pet only hours later is very traumatizing. With that being said, from the time I called, to arrival, to saying goodbye, everyone here was extremely kind, gentle, and empathetic. You could not have a better group to handle these tougher moments. The vet, techs, receptionist, and anyone else I came in contact with offered me comfort and compassion. I seriously cannot say enough positive words to describe the dedication of this staff. Facility is also very clean and well managed. If you are in a spot where you have to visit an emergency vet/ specialist, you can trust them to guide you and go above and beyond to help you and your pet.

It’s only been 24 hrs that we had to say good bye to our sweet baby girl Zoey. The feeling you have walking into this hospital is overwhelming amazing. The staff met us outside and ga e our girl comfort while arriving. The news we received was very unexpected. I’m still very broken of loosing our girl. She would have been 11 next month. Grieving is not something I do very well. However, the staff was amazing from beginning to end. We stayed with our girl as she passed and I will never forget. How wonderful they were with her. I’m still very devastated and can’t stop crying for her. She was my world. She helped me thru breast cancer and all my losses the last 11 yrs that this is very hard and I’m crying sending this review. She will be coming home to us in a week. I just can’t say enough how they were with our family and our other fur baby with us saying his goodbyes to her as she went to sleep. Thank you again it this will be a very long time before I can not feel so much grief. She was my world my healer. I just want her back. I pray to God for strength with this great loss 🌈💕🙏🏼❤️‍🩹

New river and Dr Richardson are truly remarkable. Cheyenne was so compassionate taking care of River. We went to HHI for a weekend trip and ended up in emergency for our stressed out 3 yo golden. Highly recommend this team! We made it home thanks to their treatment plan!

This is the second time using New River for different pets. Unfortunately this most recent visit would be the last for our sweet boy Kole. What was one of our worst days was made a little more bearable because of the kind, compassionate and professional staff. I highly recommend New River Vet.
