How to Save Money at Rocky Creek Veterinary Hospital and Pet Resort

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I'm so glad we found Rocky Creek. My girl has a lot of genetic fear. It's better now after 4 years but it's been a lot of work. She has bad allergies so we needed a vet practice that would take the time to make it a good experience. She has to go every 6 weeks. My girl might be fearful but she's a very good girl. A little bit of patience goes a long way with her. Rocky Creek was so excellent about listening to my advice and understanding that my advocacy for her is from a place of love and knowledge. At the first visit, she needed a hands on exam and 2 shots. She did good with the exam and 1 shot but she was done. I told them I'd call to reschedule for the other shot but that this visit was done. They understood and gave me no grief. The staff take the time to bounce her ball, they check the lobby when we go to leave, they hear me when I tell them what she needs. Something cold in her eyes? Let her feel it first. Just hold it against her ear. She needs a shot? Just let her sniff it before you get to sticking her with it. I think they schedule us around times when it's way less busy. I felt so good about it here I brought my other dog here to be euthanized. The rooms are larger and the energy is way better. For as terrible of a time it was, Rocky Creek did a wonderful job. I knew I was doing the right thing for him. They were so patient with me. The doctor was just listening to me talk about what was going on. Eventually she asked if I had made a decision. I had. She instantly shifted to being supportive of my decision. I had no doubts that I was doing it too soon. I think there are different charges for euthanizing different sizes of animals. It said the fee was for dogs over 100lbs. My boy was 101lbs. He wouldn't have been over 100lbs without his pee pad on and the ton of water he drank. If I had known 1lb made a difference, things would have been handled in other ways. It just feels wrong. I think other people should be made aware of this before they're in the same situation. I was so emotionally distraught that I didn't even notice they charged more because he was 1lb over.

We just moved to the area and hadn't had a chance to get a new vet for our dog settled yet. When a circumstance arose that we deemed an emergency, Rocky Creek was responsive and able to get us in immediately and take care of our fur ball. Doctor, tech, and staff were all helpful, pleasant, and knowledgeable and took great care of us during an otherwise hectic time in an unfamiliar place. Location is easily accessible, clean, and welcoming environment. We will absolutely be returning as a regular client and recommend to any who may be looking. Looking forward to also utilizing their grooming and boarding as well.

The entire staff was so patient again today with my stubborn boy Bruce. Extra hands came out to help get him into a room, and Sarah called in a mentor to assist with his nail trim when he was being a pawful. I can tell the the RCVH staff cares for the patients like they're their own pets.

We're coming down from upstate NY and I had to set up a new veterinarian for my Sam and Diamond. Rocky Creek provided awesome service from getting our records transferred to scheduling to making sure we were all comfortable. So happy to have found them!
