How to Save Money at Paw Prints Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I called for a pet appointment on Monday and was given an appointment for Friday morning. I was very happy with the ability to make an appointment that didn't take weeks to get into. I was quoted a $160 over the phone Based on the information I had given about my pet for our reason to come in. While there we were promptly checked in, taken back, examined and quick fecal collection. I asked for an extra vaccine and I agreed to probiotics so my total bill came out to be $200. I am not sure what all the fuss is about on these reviews with issues with cost. Everyone I encountered was nice and friendly. The vet (Dr. Pickens) spent time with my pet and did not rush in an out.

Rude, expensive and incompetent are the words that best describe my experience with this "practice". The front office staff was incredibly rude when I asked basic questions about the services I needed performed for my pet. They provided my pet with a 1 year rabies vaccination when I requested a 3 year vaccination even though it was available and they stated their was no difference in efficacy, or cost. They stated they did not provide any vaccines against the canine flu as it was not cost effective for them to offer. We had asked if they provided the canine flu vaccine when we scheduled the appointment and were told it was available. The prices they charged me for standard treatments were well above what I paid at other practices. When I inquired about their fee schedule for additional services they quoted ambiguous and extremely broad ranges. Overall, I don't believe the practice had my pets care as a primary objective. I would not recommend this practice for any reason.

Their heart is in the right place, but I'm not sure their prices are reasonable/understood and their new vet needs to be more practical with our asks. My husband brought in our almost 13 year old dog for an exam today and to talk about putting her down. The vet reveals that she has a "blood bomb" on her knee that could burst at any moment and we won't be able to stop the bleeding when it bursts. The alternative to is take her to an expensive specialist to get it removed, which isn't financially feasible and made clear to the vet. After this, the vet insists on lab work that is quoted to us by the vet and lab tech as $80. We were charged $99 for labs plus the exam fee so we're out $164. While waiting for labs to be drawn, my husband was asked to go into the waiting area since the room was needed for other exams and running labs will take 20 minutes. Labs weren't even drawn yet. Insisting on running the labs was the wrong thing to convince my husband to do since we still have issue of the ticking blood bomb on my dog's knee. The vet tells my husband that her labs look great in the waiting room and sends him on his way feeling so upset and confused. I called to schedule my dog to be put down tomorrow morning, which is upsetting enough. $96 euthansia fee alone if we take her home. $256 if we get her cremated; no ashes returned. $411 if she's cremated and her ashes returned.

Most experiences positive, but this time I was misdirected by the vet, according to the front desk, and she was not helpful. This shouldn’t happen. What a vet tells you is what should be fact. Not in this case. Edit: I spoke with the owner of this practice the next day and was assured this would not happen again. The vet was not at fault, just to be clear. My experiences are usually positive, as originally stated, and this incident will not prevent me from staying with this practice. I have changed my rating.
