How to Save Money at Forest Acres Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my baby for a grooming (sedated), and should have only had to pay $297 (with the pills the doctor recommended I get after seeing his liver values a tad bit elevated, though i wasn’t informed of the values.) Once I picked him up, the total ended up being almost $400. My baby came home with a bloody patch/bruise on his neck, that grew bigger after 24 hours. Worried, I had to call the hospital and was communicated of this issue, and was told I should have been told this when I picked him up, when I wasn’t. They acted surprised "that nobody told me" about the bruise, bla, bla, bla, It's ok, I paid whatever they said was due. I was rushed out the door once I picked my dog up. My dog has not been acting the same since, he is sad, and has had a hard time trusting his family since being back. I don’t know what happened when we dropped him off, but they did not treat my dog with love and respect as they are expected to. Based on my experience they don't treat customers or pets with dignity and respect. I will never take my dog here again.

I used to really enjoy taking my dogs here because of the friendly staff, decent prices, and closeness to home. Lately every time I bring my dog in, it’s like it’s the first time they’re ever seeing her. Long term issues are not being treated. They keep prescribing the same treatments even when we that communicate that they are not effective. Last time we went there, we dropped our dog off, and a few hours later, received a VM from the vet with her diagnosis and the same ineffective recommendations we always get, even though it had been less then three months since we were last in for the exact same issue. The recommendations showed us that the form we filled out when we dropped our dog off was not even read, and also seemed to imply that the staff weren’t even aware of her medical history even though this is the only vet we’ve been to for the past two years. They prescribed her medications that she’s had side effects to in the past as well as medications that we have tried in the past more than once that have not worked. We were condescendingly told to change her to a poultry free diet, even though we included in the paperwork that she is already on one. We attempted to call back and were told directly on the phone that we couldn’t speak with the vet. We asked again when we showed up to pick up our dog waited 15+ minutes only to be forced out by the front desk staff. They told us we were welcome to make another appointment at a later date (and pay more money) if we actually wanted to speak to the practitioner taking care of our beloved pet about the illness that we had her seen for. Let me make this clear: we made an appointment, dropped our dog off, received a voicemail telling us to come pick her up and N E V E R spoke to the actual veterinarian. My dog completed the course of prescribed medications and is not doing any better than she was before I dropped her off. I have no idea what goes on when I drop my dog off here, but I won’t be doing it anymore.

I can't say enough about Dr. Graham. We switched to her a couple of years ago after using Banfield for about 8 years. We had two rescue fur babies and our beautiful black lab Bella got lymphoma recently and went downhill faster than we could have ever imagined. Dr. Graham worked us into her busy schedule when everything took a turn for the worst. She was incredible and I couldn't have asked for better care. We had to help Bella cross rainbow bridge and I can't imagine anyone else helping us through this tough time. She is truly the best.

Grooming for my Feral girl Eva and a bath for my senior Spooky. They both did very well. Eva required sedation. Spook was a lover boy and enjoyed his time in the cat room.

I live in Irmo and work in Forest Acres. The Vet we used to see in Irmo has gotten to where you can only get in if you use their "urgent clinic = $$$". So, I called FAAH just to see if I could bring my dog Sammie in on the way to work because she wasn't sleeping and something was definitely wrong. They worked her in that day and were so sweet and patient with her. She was completely at ease (which is usually never the case). Dr. Graham was very thorough and took the time to answer all my questions. Nothing about our visit felt rushed. From the time I called to make the appointment to actually walking into the clinic, everyone was friendly and welcoming to me and most importantly to Sammie. We have definitely found our pet care home and I will gladly make the drive from Irmo ... they are really that good!
