How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I wouldn’t waste your money getting the wellness plan. They schedule out 3 months for vacations and exams but when your animals actually need to see a vet they don’t have any appointments for 3 weeks plus and refer you to take them to an emergency vet. Has happened multiple times and not sure why I have kept my babies at a vet clinic that can’t properly care for their clients, they only care about bringing new ones in and getting that monthly payment while sacrificing the value of veterinary service they can provide to your animals. It’s a greedy company and very shameful!!! The staff is pleasant but very unapologetic about the fact that there should be some appointment saved each week for animals that are actually sick and need to see their doctor sooner than a month out. There are signs all over to sign up for the wellness plan but if they can’t properly care for their clients they should rethink accepting new ones. I imagine all your fur babies are worth more.

One of the most unprofessional businesses I’ve ever been to. I need to get a breed DNA test for my insurance company and they’re one of the only vets in CHS that does them so I scheduled an appointment and the earliest availability was a month out. I show up and they keep my dog for the whole day and then call me a month later and say “the DNA test wasn’t done correctly so we need you to come back in again” except this time they say I don’t need an appointment since it only takes them 2 seconds. So why did I need an appointment the first time and why did you need to keep my dog all day?? Anyways, I show up during their normal operating hours and nobody is there. They have a sign that says ‘Out for lunch’ but it was 3:30 PM, so I go ask the cashier up front and she says they never showed up for work that day.

Most folks there are good and the primary vet is very compassionate. I give it three stars because I find it very difficult to get in touch with someone with some general questions. Meaning, about a month ago, I tried call to see if they have availability to administer subcutaneous fluids for my pup, but I no one picked up the phone until after 11am or 12pm. My pup is also being cared for by a internist at the CVRC and they recently asked me if i could contact this Banfield because they too were having difficulties reaching out to someone. According to Banfield's web site, their hours of operations on a Friday are 8am to 6pm. It is now 11am and when I just called, I get an automatic message saying "their office is currently closed." This is an ongoing issue, especially if another veterinarian office is trying to get updated records. Someone is dropping the ball. Update: called again today at 1:53pm and still receiving the automated "our office is currently closed" message. UPDATE 10/19: this update is not about this location, but about Banfield in general. My pup recently crossed the rainbow 🌈 bridge. I tried to cancel her plan, but I was told the following : “ Canceling a Wellness Plan is all based on usage. We figure in how much the hospitals have provided in services and how many payments you have made. We then come to a final balance based on whichever costs less; the remaining balance of future plan payments, or the remaining costs of services after deducting past payments. You have the option to pay the balance in full today, or continue the monthly payment plan & have the plan expire once the 12 month agreement is finished. Which would you prefer?” So in short, if your pet DIES, you will be required to pay for the remainder of your annual plan. I’ve been with Banfield for 17 years and this was very disappointing. I will not be renewing my other pup’s plan. You’re probably better off signing up with a wellness plan with pet insurance, like Embrace.

We take our girl Chloe here. They take very good care of her. She was excited to go the vet, she was all smiles😊. She was such a good girl we got her a new shirt that had AC/DC 🤘 on it and she got a new collar made by KONG.

Left work early on tuesday to get to the vet before 6pm so i could pick up some simprica trio, walked up to counter at 522pm they said they were closed for the day and all systems shut down. Literally closed 45 mins early and said oh well try again tomorrow pretty much. Got some lazy usless employees over there...
