How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have used Banfield since at least 2003. Prior military affiliated and they have been so great in every state I have lived in and used them. I currently live in CT, but drive to Warwick, RI, because the staff and the vets at this location are phenomenal and my pets always feel at ease there and it’s really one of their favorite places to go! Which is strange for a dog. But all 3 of the dogs I have taken to this location get so excited when we get there and literally cry when we leave. Nimbus is the newest addition and just got on his wellness plan two weeks ago!

We have taken our pets here for years. Dawn at the front desk is awesome with our dogs. Generally we can get seen in a timely manner because we use their wellness plan. It's been helpful to keep costs down as well. Vets have been good and communicate after every visit. Both dogs love coming here and will lay for belly rubs when registering. That speaks volumes about this place. Sometimes it's hard to get them on the phone when they're understaffed. I just stop by while I'm doing my shopping at PetSmart and make appointments as needed.

Our dog received her first dental cleaning and the staff were wonderful. My dog has high anxiety they allowed her to rest in bed by their feet in the office as she was recovering from anesthesia. Such a good feeling knowing your pet is treating with such care. I highly recommend.

I use to rave about the service and care my pets received from Banfield, I now will tell people how dissatisfied I am with their teams. My beloved cat Obie of 14yrs passed unexpectedly this past March I tried calling to cancel the insurance as I no longer needed it and saw no reason to continue paying for a service I was no longer going to be using. Well, what a nightmare that was. Suffice to say I ended up still having to pay the remaining months on my plan for a service I no longer needed for a pet who was deceased. If you’re looking for pet insurance I strongly urge you to look elsewhere because Banfield Pet Insurance are pirates and will rob you for your hard earned money.

GREAT CARE FOR MY KITTY. I can't thank this place enough for caring for my Wanda .. I was on a budget from this unexpected UTI and they worked with me and gave her very great care. Dropped her off at 130ish and picked her up around 430ish :) please take your business here. They take emergencies and will work with your budget... They are awesome and definitely not money hungry. They fixed the problem and actually cared for the cat... Everyone else $210 to walk in the door alone even for a simple issue .. I only paid $184ish for her walk in here and urinalysis and was originally told $210 for all the workup without meds yet .not sure what changed but thought that was decent price compared to around town. Please let the doctors care for your pet here they do an Amazing job .. I am so happy Wanda had people who actually took the time and cared you don't see that alot with vets and I am crying cause vets are so money hungry it's nuts... I will definitely be doing business again here :)
