How to Save Money at Ocean State Veterinary Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Even though no one wants to take a trip to the ER vet, we love the fact that Ocean State is there about 40 minutes away. We have taken our mini Aussie, Ollie, here a few times and have always been impressed. It's literally like a hospital for people but for your pet. Staff always communicates well and most everything needed to diagnose or treat your pet is on site. The patient liason even emailed us twice over the two day period with updates & photos - in addition to a thorough explanation from the doctor. To those who are upset over costs or those thinking about getting a pet - please consider pet health insurance so you don't need to worry when faced with the best care for your pet or the cost of the treatment. It certainly puts us at ease that we have Healthy Paws insurance for both of our dogs. So glad you are close by and open 24/7 with top of the line doctors, nurses & techs.

Went here a few times due to a sudden, massive lump on my dog's side. After a few sessions and a CT scan it was discovered to be a massive lipoma that needed removal. Unfortunately, I didn't have a good credit score so I was ineligible for their payment plan services, so I had to fundraise for over a year. Had a surgery re-evaluation and scheduled surgery the very next week. After a six pound tumor was removed from my girl, she's got a new lease on life. I cannot thank Dr. Coronado and the staff for taking such good care of her. They're always so gentle and caring, especially knowing my dog has been abused in the past and scared of most people. The only complaints is that it's near impossible to contact the surgery department; be prepared to call often to get in touch with them. EDIT: It's now March so I thought I'd share the result of her surgery! You can't even see the scar, and her fur has a slightly different texture where the incision was. She's back to running, jumping, and walking without a limp!

The Oncology department is amazing especially Dr Caleb Alexander. The ER department is great. This place is great so amazing with furbabies. I unfortunately lost my baby to Cancer and Dr. Alexander took the time to call me and send his condolences. This just verified everything I already knew about Ocean State Veterinary.

Incredibly pleased with my little guys BOAS surgery and neuter! David Sweet did an amazing job and my baby was immediately breathing better. OSVS took such great care of him and was there for any and all questions I had. David sweet called me immediately after surgery to tell me how everything went and how was recovering from the anesthesia. Very clear and concise, especially great for a worried frenchie mama. He ended up needing his nares opened up, palate trimmed, and tonsils taken out. He is healing so well and acting like nothing ever happened! I can’t thank OSVS enough for helping my little guy breathe and giving him a happy experience while he was there overnight.

Everyone we dealt with here were nothing short of amazing, compassionate and friendly. Excellent bedside manner. The discharge Dr was so nice and comforting, Dr Su, all of reception, and the admitting doctor as well. They took great care of my cat. Lance really helped make this entire situation better. He was so detailed and awesome for the updates for my baby, and sent me the best email with a photo to help make me feel much better and comforted. This hospital helped make this experience the best it could go. Thank you all ❤️
