How to Save Money at Animal Emergency & Referral Center of York, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our little girl Harper a doxy mix. Let's have invented herself. Well. Chasing a squirrel or jumping off the bed.she was having problems in pain climbing the steps in our home. It continually got worse and we knew we had to have foreseen but our vet was booked up so we decided that it was an necessary to. Take her to the emergency veterinary center. They were kind compassionate and Barry understanding and we sold doctor Ludwig who explained what we need to do toremedy the situation. We were given a estimate of cost before she was seen. And it turned out that she didn't need as much as they had thought. I was very pleased with the service and wouldn't hesitate To recommend them. Thank you to the staff and Dr Ludwig for taking such care with our little girl. She's on the mind and as soon as she's better, she's going on a diet because she needs to lose some pesky Lbs.

I had to use these great people with 2 of my cats over the years. Both were the best! Even the first one that turned into end of life care. They were so caring, knowledgeable & open about every step along the way. I will not hesitate returning if I need their help when my regular vet’s office is closed. They also work well with my vet about the visit and care they gave. So if you need help for your fur baby don’t hesitate to go! Thanks to all in the office!

This place is wonderful. I first went to a place in Shrewsbury as it is closer to my home but was told there was an 8-10 hr wait and if I left would lose my place in line all while there was not another soul in the waiting area and I was holding my dog who had a bad allergic reaction to a shot. I promptly went to the center in York where they told me on the phone I could drop off my dog if the wait was too long. I got there and they took Titus right back and took care of him. The doctor and staff were so kind and pleasant. This will always be my first stop!

I took my 12 y/o Chihuahua mix, Rigley to the emergency vet after I came home from work and found him struggling to lift his head and walk. The staff and vet were extremely supportive, friendly and compassionate. I was given 2 estimates for treatment prior to the treatment commencing. I felt seen and heard by the staff. I needed help with applying for Care Credit and one staff member helped me. Rigley was x-rayed and the problem was discussed with me by the vet. We planned a treatment and medication was administered and given to continue at home. Rigley was given a good prognosis and an 80% chance to make a full recovery. I took Rigley home and he didn’t have to stay at the vet.

Its hard to be nit picky when you are pretty much only visiting if you have an emergency and your mind is on much more important things. Staff is nice and the vet really does do their best to explain all the options. I have spent many hours sitting in the waiting room here over the years (senior dog with many health issues often presenting themselves after our primary vet closes for the night). The have some snacks and little water bottles for you while you wait.
