How to Save Money at Safe Haven Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 3 month old Golden Retriever eats everything, including things that are harmful or toxic. We had a scary morning with how sick he got after getting into our compost (with old tomato plants and unripe tomatoes) so we headed straight to Safe Haven. Every staff member we interacted with was so kind, compassionate and helped my Charlie Cheeseburger start to feel better. Dr Kristen was so patient and kind, giving me options for testing and treatments without pressure to make rash decisions. She explained everything thoroughly to ensure that I understood the options and could make an educated decision. They even gave me some paper towels and cleaning spray to clean my car (he was really sick) while they treated and nursed him back to health. I’ll definitely go to them if/when we have another urgent matter with this crazy but sweet pup. Tonight he goes about like he hasn’t skipped a beat.

They are awesome here. We've had our pug at 5 different vets and had really good service and care from all of them. However- when it came to getting tests done, etc, and counseling us on our situation, Safe Haven was the best. Getting serious medical procedures on our pets costs a lot of money and takes a long time everywhere, and yes, it sucks. But, it you gotta put down some real money on your fur baby, at least give it to the best one. Right? We drove 45 minutes to get there/ worth it. CoCo says hi- Actually she's barking... ✌🏻

We were referred by our vet. There was a mix up (by our vet's office), but Safe Haven accommodated us. They were able to give our cat an ultrasound and pinpoint the problem. The vet we saw was amazing and so was the vet tech and receptionist. They were all kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable. The cost was remarkably reasonable, too. Overall wonderful experience. I highly recommend this place.

Dr Peterson at Safe Haven has been such a delight to work with. I've been bringing her my medically complex cat, Milo, for almost a year. I brought him to her upon recommendation from both a family member and another specialist. Safe Haven is incredibly responsive to any questions and provides wonderful care to their patients. All of the medical professionals I've interacted with have been very kind, compassionate, and helpful. The techs have all been very attentive and excited to see Milo when he is in (it helps that he is the sweetest orange boy ever!). Dr Peterson personally types up the most detailed discharge sheets I have ever seen from any vet at any hospital. This facility is truly a gem. I also had one of my cats at urgent care a few weeks ago, and the team in that building was wonderful as well. I would recommend Safe Haven to anyone.

Safe Haven provided professional care and great advice for both of our pets. I had taken 2 of my cats here on separate occasions. Once was for my cat who needed to be seen urgently for an infected wound behind his ear, the other was a scheduled appointment for our cat, in which they found cancer and continued treatment. With the help of Dr. Peterson we were able to get a whole extra year with our boy before having to say goodbye when he was previously knocking on deaths doorstep. We are so appreciative of everything you all have done!
