How to Save Money at The Big Easy Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
They are kind and thorough, and always do a great job of taking care of my doggos. They explain everything well, and give you options to help you understand how to best take care of your pet's needs. I accompanied a friend as they took their dog to his last vet visit, and they were extremely compassionate and supportive for that as well. I really recommend them.

We had to put my mom's cat to sleep after it had suffered paralysis from back cancer. It was a terribly sad thing to go through and my mother was sick over the poor cat. We went here on the recommendation of a friend of mine. I have never experienced such compassion and sympathy at a vet's office. They provided a very comfortable room with couches (not a typical medical exam room) The employees were patient and so kind. What a difference from anything I had experienced before. I immediately decided that I would bring my pets here going forward! Also - they actually answer the phone and are able to get you in to see a doctor in a "normal" time frame. My current vet has a wait list for weeks, sometimes months to get an appointment. It's ridiculous. I'm thrilled to have found such a wonderful place to bring my furry family members! Thank you BIG EASY.

Extremely disappointed in my experience here. Now I will say, the front desk girls were lovely, the nurses (vet techs? Cindy is a gem) were all kind but as a business this is run so poorly. 2 visits (2 days apart), 6 medications, and $500 later, we are narrowed in to what could possibly be wrong with my dog. After a Friday morning walk in visit left me feeling like my dog was getting new symptoms and something else was evolving with her pain, I called right back to see if everything was as expected. My dog developed a limp between being at the vet to heading home, something that she wasn't doing prior to the visit. I thought maybe it was due to the blood draw but I started her rounds of medicines and it was suggested to keep an eye on her and come back on Saturday. Saturdays are shortened hours with only vet techs so I waited until Monday, also hoping perhaps it just took time for the medicines to kick in. However things were getting worse and my dog was in a lot of pain even with 2 pain killers and a muscle relaxer. Taking another half day off work, I'm first in line to be re-checked and it was narrowed down to the already identified disc issue but now with some additional diagnosis that it was affecting her neck when she turns her head specifically to the right. Something that wasn't uncovered in the Friday visit but this seemed to explain so much more! The direction was to stop one of the 3 medicines I was given on Friday and I was given 3 more medicines today. The medicine I needed to stop using from 2 days ago was $70, I was still charged for 2 visits, and my questioning the logic on the charge led to a condescending lecture about how health care works. I was uncomfortable and beside myself. Somehow putting more of my dogs symptoms together took this office longer to sort out and this was now at my expense in both time and money. I expected better.

ABSOLUTE WORST VET IN PITTSBURGH. Do not come here for care for your pet- they are the worst I have ever experienced. They have no respect for your time, and do not show a true care for your animal. I scheduled a neutering for my one year old dog and was told to bring him in between 8-9AM, so we arrived at 8:15AM. We were never seen by the vet and they took my dog back letting me know a vet would be in touch prior to surgery. He would be ready to be picked up between 3-5PM. I never heard from the vet. I called at 3:30PM for an update, and he still had not been operated on. I called at 5PM for an update and he still had not been operated on. I was told he would be ready for pickup at 6:30- near 12 hours after I dropped him off. I arrived at 6:30PM and my dog was not ready to come home and still waking up from Anesthesia. The vet gave me reasoning for the delay that she almost lost the dog before him on the table- which did not help my nerves in the slightest considering neutering/ spaying is the most common procedures for vets. Upon getting home I began to get concerned as my pet's incision was looking red- I sent pictures to the vet as they requested and they offered antibiotics and suggested I wait few days to see if it worsened. You guessed it- it did. His entire site was now inflamed, bruised, etc. I sent them pictures yet again and they called to let me know that I could bring him in for a walk-in (no timing guarantee). I requested a formal appointment in which they told me they cannot give me as they are working on an internal software update. Yesterday, I went in person to the hospital to try to talk to a vet- there were none on site but they did explain to me based on the pictures, it is just bruising and my dog just needs ice on the area. Today, I got a call checking in on the incision from pictures I sent last week- the staff member had no clue I had been in yesterday. The lack of surgical and post-surgical care that put my dog in a condition they caused is insulting and extremely pitiful. If there was a care for animals at Big Easy Animal Hospital, it does not show. I am disheartened and would NEVER recommend this vet to anyone in Pittsburgh.

Normally I don't give reviews but I had bad experiences here the three times I took my cats in. Each time I spent a minimum of 3 hours here (max 4.5), two of which were in the waiting room. It doesn't matter if you're a walk-in or if you have an appointment, morning or evening, there's always a wait. The staff there are nice and knowledgeable which is why I originally ignored the bad reviews in the first place. But even on the good reviews there are comments about how long the wait is. The last visit, my one cat was absolutely traumatized. When they finally got in to seeing my cats, they were extremely disorganized. I understand there are long days, etc. But if every time I come in and hear "thanks for your patience, it's been a long day" maybe you need to change something about your practice? The wait is not worth the care here.
