How to Save Money at Pittsburgh Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We got a new kitten and she needed to be tested immediately for FIV. My regular vet couldn't see her for 3 weeks. I called this place and they could see her the same day. They were awesome. She got an exam and two medications and the whole thing was only $190. I will probably start coming here with my other animals.

I just wanted to share a positive review — I just took my parent’s dog to a vet that isn’t thorough at all. I was in and out of that clinic in 20 minutes , including payment and weight check . So, I feel so glad that my dog goes to Pittsburgh Animal Hospital . They are again thorough , great with my dog ( who has extreme anxiety ) and they helped me figure out the right diet for him.

First off Dr. Shaw is rude and talks to you like you are stupid simply for asking questions. The first time it happened it was my first visit with my new puppy and I shrugged it off as - maybe he is having a bad day- my second (and final) visit he was similarly very rude and condescending. All he needed to be was matter of fact by instead he chose derisive weird energy. I also believe I was misled by Dr Shaw (which is why I am submitting a review) Dr.Shaw told me he couldn’t chip my puppy without anesthesia. Just last week I got her chipped with no anesthesia. Now I suspect he was just trying to make extra money making it more involved than it needed to be. I would advise finding a different vet.

I had to bring in my dog last minute because my regular vet was closed. I called around 2pm and they were able to squeeze me in at 4pm. I was a bit nervous because my dog tends to be anxious at our regular vet. The front desk worker/tech was a younger guy and was absolutely AMAZING with my dog. I wish I would’ve caught his name. He played with my dog, gave him a few treats and made my dog feel comfortable. The result was my pup being really comfortable in this new environment! The doctor was very polite and professional and handled our case appropriately. He was very thorough in asking questions about my dog’s current illness. For 2 medications, 3 injections an exam and a pannel, our total was only $255. Thank you so much for your service! My furry feiend and I appreciate you!

This past Saturday morning I found my mom's 18 year old cat (who we inherited and were caring for after her death) collapsed and clearly experiencing some kind of major catastrophic health event (Dr. Shaw thought it was likely a cardiac event). All I knew was I needed to get her help ASAP. I searched Google for the closest vet and immediately got her in my car and drove to Pittsburgh Animal Hospital. I was desperate to make sure that she didn't suffer. Dr. Shaw and his staff saw us immediately, no issues about not having an appointment. He quickly assessed her, gave her a sedative, and helped ensure her passing was without any pain. Dr. Shaw was so gentle and kind when handling her. His staff were so kind and helpful also with arranging for her cremation so I can bury her in my mom's garden at home. . My husband and I are so deeply grateful for the help and support of this practice during a very difficult situation. Thank you so much! 💓
